Recently I have replaced all of my Sensors, Switches & Relays on my 1987 Corvette using AutoZone as my main parts supplier with mixed results. Since the AutoZone store is in a 4 block walking distance while the car is being worked on AutoZone was the logical choice. Now I am questioning the choices of part number's that AutoZone claimed to be the correct replacement parts. Let me also say I have also replaced all "pigtails" & connector's for each item as well. Here is the dilemma, At first I was getting a dash reading of "LO" then it would shoot straight to 299 degrees, and no temp readings in-between. Cutting thru the BS I am researching the OEM Part number's to match with the AutoZone Part number's and finding this a difficult task. I may need to mention this tid-bit also- This is a brand new block and everything is new about this motor with the exception of the TPI set-up (runner's, plenum, intake manifold & throttle body used from the original L98 factory motor) & Distributer, which I have replaced all internal parts inc. the Pick-up Coil. Anyone with a solution whether it is in being able to match the OEM part #'s to the AutoZone part #'s or what part #'s should be used would be greatly appreciated. BTW, let me say also that I just replaced the "new" MAF Sensor Power Relay & MAF Burn-Off Relay with the original ones to see what would happen & now I get no dash reading other than "LO" and NO Temp readings outside of this. Maybe I should go back & put the new ones back in? What I am really trying to find out is how can I get my dash readings to show what the actual temp is? I am thinking it has to do with the Engine Fan Relay located on the inner fender, driver's side, that AutoZone may have given me a wrong part # to replace with.

most parts catalogs DON'T know where the parts fit.. as the people inputting the data don't have a clue except what's printed in front of them.. now a day.. they are just warm bodies who can type.
some i think don't like their work and are trying to destroy the company they are entering data for..

So Wayne, where is this one located as this may be the culprit;

SWITCH ASM,ENG COOL TEMP IND
Part Number:  213-4793
Product Notes:  Engine Cool Temp Indicator Switch
2DR ; Gauge, 3/8in x 18 thread
Per Vehicle: 1; Years: 1984-1991

The one that goes under the Plenum, it is new, but having a small flame shoot out of the plenum & thru the Throttle Body, with the intake housing & air filter removed, could the sensor inside the plenum been burned up & now needs to be replaced again?

SENSOR,ENG COOL TEMP
Part Number:  213-928
Product Notes:
Engine Cool Temp Sensor
Und plenum ; Used for clusters w/oil ga & light combination ; Use; w/12101899 conn ; 2-Way male

wayne things that the cataloging person got #78 and #27 reversed... follow the wire colors from the wiring diagram..   the right side switch usually has a round black mushroom head with a single round terminal inside.. this is the radiator fan switch.. actually turns on the second radiator fan motor on TPI models with 2 radiator fans.. this is a switch.. its OPEN below 228F..  which means you have to microwave a small sample of antifreeze to get it above the boiling point of water..  please be careful if you want to test this..

the single blade temp sender is for the GAUGE on the dash board...  usually has a GREEN wire..
goes in the left/drivers side cylinder head.. between the #1 and 3 spark plugs..  has variable resistance between the blade terminal and the brass body..

item 65 is the Engine coolant temp sensor... it has an OVAL connector.. 2 pins..  is NOT connected to the shell of the sensor from either pin...  it has variable resistance.. is usually hooked up with a black wire and a yellow wire...  if you unplug the sensor.. it will set  code 14 or 15... if you short the two wires together.. it will set the other code..

item 57 is a big brass hex sensor .. has a fuel injection type connector on the top.. its for the COLD start injector...  it has its own page of testing.. it will almost always say BOSCH on it..
