how about a real world review of the best and most afordable machine shops and engine builders across the country.Shops that are one stop shop, not the companies that require you purchase everything from them. the old school shops where you can send them the parts you have and purchase some new parts  from them. The grass roots guys that are racing on weekends and working through the weeks.

Do you have someone in mind to tell about or are you asking for suggestions?

gettn, you sayin' that if a guy bought a kit from somewhere (say 383 rot/recip) ya'll wouldn't machine his block for the stuff?

I did the assembly, they machined/clearanced my block.
Is that a machine shop no-no?  I may have phukd-up last time around but the work was top-notch.  I didn't realize that was against protocol.

if he wants just the machine work we'll do that but I wont be putting the engine together. Too much liability with that process. If anything happens nobody wants to warrenty their parts and blames the machine shop. I have guys I buy parts from that I have a good relationship with and have never had a problem.
Just to give you an idea of a simple problem that nobody wanted to fix: we done the block work on a 302 and the guy brought in his own parts, the cam brgs were boxed wrong[all the same size] we never installed them, found the problem and called the guy,he trys to get them swapped out and he gets told they cant because the box had dirty fingerprints.  WTF?
it only gets worse from there

that's messed up, gettn.
my main or rod bearings got damaged in shipping but the machine shop managed to get them replaced.

i think i understand what you guys are saying.  i assembled mine so the warranty is in my pocket.  you guys will machine but not build with parts from an unknown source, makes sense to me.

I hate to be that way and we do lose out on some engine builds but all it takes is 1 bad part to destroy an engine then the shop gets blamed. That cost more money because not only do you lose a customer but also future customers.
A shops REPUTATION IS ONLY AS GOOD AS ITS LAST ENGINE, doesnt matter if you've been building them for 20+yrs like me.
its hard to get people to understand that, they think we're just trying to sell parts to them

That makes sense to me.  Cuts down on the hassles between machinists, customers, and parts suppliers.  Who's gonna know the parts better, the machinist/engine builder or some guy wanting 600hp from a 305?  Grin
