If you upgrade the bottom end and leave the cam you will leave so much power on the table that it will barely be worth it. You can build a upgraded TBI engine, but the 383 will most likely need a upgraded throttle body for the fuel requirements. Most of the big cam makers have efi intended cams that will work fine.

You can find a cam that'll be friendly for your computer. AS for the TBI unit and a 383, you need to find the TBI off a '92-'95 350 equipped truck (they were bigger than previous years) then add some 454 injectors.

with vortecs you can get 400hp and ftlbs of tq. with the 350. summit has vortec cast iron's on sale right now for 292! a piece!. definately they way to go over just about everystock head out. always worth 20-40hp alone. But scoggin dickey sells the modiffied L31vortecs that come ready for highlift cams for about 360 a piece. as the un moddified l31 are only good for about 420" lift stock. combine a fresh 350 with a vortec heads a vortec intake a healthy cam some headers and atleast 2.5" exhaust and some good flowmasters and you should get the 400hp. I'm sure you will have to upgrade the injectors, computer etc. 383 might be more of a hassle? it's just getting it to run right but that might yield another 70hp and ftlbs of tq over a 350 and should definately put you at the 450hp and ftlbs of tq. and get your tires smokin in the dry

If you have vortecs already check you casting numbers to figure out what you have. some of the vortecs were prone to cracking and the other thing not being able to run a cam without mods. and I would use a tbi cam if possible

big question is it worth it to do all the mods to tbi system or convert to carb? i have a 1990 k2500 wanting to make 300bhp without spending to much.

Im doing a similar build for my 87 chevy truck with a TBI, and I havent been able to find a TBI intake manifold to run with vortec heads.

Im using a Comp Cams 258 Grind hyd. roller cam, .480 I/.488 E. It should have excellent low to mid range power and good fuel economy,  depending on your application it should be more than enough,  mines going in a full size truck/daily driver so it should be just right for my needs.
