I've got a 400 sbc from a '72 caprice. I've got it in a '78 camaro, and i'm tryin to make it a real fast paced car. I like to get out on some back roads and really lay it down if you know what i mean. I have done some mods to it, it has a summit cam with .488 lift with a duration of 234 on both intake and exhaust, its got a edelbrock torker II intake and a edelbrock 1407 (750cfm carb). Its also got a high volume oil pump, and headers. what else can i do to get more out of my engine? i know a bore would help but what about heads, everyone keeps telling me that i can't put any other chevy heads except the 400sbc heads???

To the best of my knowledge your correct. You can only use 400 heads on that block.  Check with summit or some of the other parts houses to see if there are aftermarket heads available.  Short of that, depending on your budget and setup, you can probably get your factory heads massaged a bit to allow better flow. You can cam up an engine till the cows come home but if it doesn't breath and the setup isn't right, your not going to get the desired results.  Check some of the back issues of the mag here.  Seems like I saw an article or two about package setups with heads, cam and carb that could give you some ideas.
Hope this helps.

i just got finished buildig a 406 on a 400 block that features edelbrock rpm heads for a 350.what you have to do is drill steam holes in the heads between the combution chambers using 400 head gaskets as a template.any decent automotive machine shop should be able to do this if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself also you will have to use 400 head gaskets.the 406 i just built features edl-2098 top end kit rated at 410 hp on a 9.5 to 1 350 on the 406 with 10.5 to 1 with 750 hp holly carb i expect close to 440 hp good luck.

you can put 350sbc heads on it but you have to drill the block for steam holes and you have to use all 350sbc internals at that point like to cam and crank and set up the accessary drive depending on what you putting on the surpingtine (sp) belt like its a 350sbc. but putting 350 heads on it. turns your 400sbc into a 373sbc which from my understanding is a pretty badass motor

NO NO NO Kern84 chevyguy78 you can put ANY small block chevy head on the 400 block you just need to use 400 head gaskets and drill steam holes in the heads! and no matter what you do you cannot change the cubic inch of the engine just by changing the heads kern84 the external block dimensions are identical for all the small block chevy's it's the internals that differ ,,,,if you use a 350 crank in a 400 block it is a 372 if you put a 400 crank in a 350 block you get 377 (standard bore) with a .030 over bore they become 377 and 382.6 respectively to determine and engines displacement you multiply bore x bore x stroke x .7854 x 8
any question's
for your set up i would do this:
holley 750 carb
dual plane intake (like a performer or oerformer rpm)
vortec 062 or 906 castings (intake to match heads)
cam with .225-230 duration and .475-.480 lift 108 lsa
1 5/8 in headers 2.5 in dual exhaust
1.5 or 1.6 Roller rockers
prollly get 375 h.p. and 425 lb ft of torque and can be built cheap

actually the crank and cam and heads from a 327 cobra jet will work on the small block 400. the only problem they have with it is that they tend to overheat a little too much. but to fix that problem you would want to drill the cooling holes as big as they could possibly go. you can either have a parts machinist do it or yourself with a drill press. but i also don't know if you want to de-stroke it or not. but good luck and hope this works out for you

Heads from a 327 "Cobra Jet",,, how is a Ford head going to bolt on a Small Block Chevy???
I think the main journal size on a 350 is a tad smaller than 400 journals,,, if DESTROKING is intended.
My question is why do this and up with less than what a good 400 can deliver with a stock 3.75" stroke.

some people should not comment about stuff they dont understand.changing heads has nothing to do with displacement.putting 350 crank in a 400 with bearing spacers makes a 377 if its .030 over.

You are absolutely right,,, some people should remain lurkers and say nothing at all.
You forgot to mention that by putting in a 350 crank, with 3.48" stroke,,, he'll need stroker pistons.
The 400 came with a 3.750" crank and 5.565" rod.
The 350 has a 5.7" rod
Seems there's a bit more than meets the eye, with mixing and matching parts, huh.

Wally0143 WTF a 79 `cuda 400 hemi? It's a Mopar so 8 sec. 1/4 mile is the only thing that could be real. LOL Ha Ha Ha. There is a company STAGE V that makes Hemi heads & intake for a B-Engine 383/400 Mopar about $8000 for top end kit minus exhaust, dist. & carbs  3836bbl/Budnicks
