I am getting ready to build 2 400 small blocks that I have had for some time. My question is:
Are there any special clearance issues with using the 5.7 rod on a stock 400 crank and also, is there any real "street" advantage to using the 5.7 rod? Is this just a lot of work that you would want to do on a race engine or does it have practical application on the street?
One engine will go into my 4x4 work truck and the other will go into my ' 62 Impala cruiser. Neither engine will be raced but both will be driven.  I ask because I have noticed that a lot of the aftermarket builders use the 5.7 rods.

The 5.7 inch connecting rod is the length of any 350 or 400 cubic inch engine. The reason a lot of aftermarket builders use 5.7 inch rods is because those are the stock length so there will not be anoymore clearance issues. If you do the 6 inch rods than you have to check for deck height clearance and oil pan clearance also. There is not really much of an advantage a 5.7 inch rod has that a 6 inch rod doesn't except for maybe a couple hundred rpms. but those hundreds of rpms might be useful for the 4x4 but not really very much for the Impala.

the 400 uses a 5.565 inch rod.and to anwser your question there would not be enough advantage on a street/p.u. engine to justify the extra expence/labor involved in going to 5.7 rods and correct pistons.hope this helps.

PS if you do use the gm/350 5.7 rods there are some cam/rodbolt clearance issues.be careful.
