i have been researching this for a while.. and posted the individual answers  a few times...

a lot of these can be found on Ebay.. but the best deals are usually found on craigs list...

what's important..  price...    and if they have the proper cables and cartridges to work with your car...

this is the OTC monitor 2000...  an early scan tool.. work great and dirt cheep right now used. there are 2 of these on the los angeles craigs list right now.. for under 70 bucks... but only one i think has cartridges.

OTC2000

this is the OTC monitor 4000E.. there are several variations of this..   4000...  4000E.. 4000 enhanced.. enhanced monitor..   some come with a lot of cables.. and cartridges..
Otcmonitor4000e

this is the actron CP9110 that was sold at many many parts stores up till about 8 years ago..  it works great also.. there might be a few new ones floating around..  if you run across one without the GM cartridge . i have seen the cartridge and cables on ebay for 5 bucks..

Cp9110actronobd1scantool

this is the autoxray eazylink scan tool...  there are a bunch of different ones of these...  not all can read the important OBD1 gm live data stream...
Autoxrayezlinkscanner

this is a snap on MT2500 scan tool...   these along with the OTC scan tools were full on professional scan tools.. they get really expensive if you need something for them.. but i have seen complete kits for 300 bucks..
many come with a lot more cables..
Mt2500snapon

this is the OTC Genisys... a truly impressive scan tool...  there are lots of variations on these.. i have seen early versions sell for under 200 bucks..   the later versions are really expensive..

Otcgenisys

almost everything above can be had usually for under 300 bucks.. many times a lot less...

then.. for those who want something new...   the OTC 3499N is just over 520 bucks for a kit.. depending on where you buy it..   this is a full fledged scan tool.. it is the only crop of NEW consumer scan tools currently available that will read live data on OBD1 GM cars...   it will also read all the NEW OBD2 cars.. abs brakes and diesel pick up trucks..

OTC3499NG]

Otc3499nincluded

almost all the manuals for these scan tools depending upon the individual models are available online...

before buying.. you might want to make sure that the seller can make it work on your car...

there are cartridges.. and cables...  to fit many different cars..   dozens of them...   not all scan tools came with the proper cables for the GM obd1 connector.. and the matching cartridges..

Also the Actron Elite Autoscanner OBD1 and OBD2 is great! I got it as a gift so I don't know the price but it is expensive for sure.

Worth obtaining one though

oh...   when you get a scan tool    you will also need to print this chart

Scandatagm

please .. go over the this chart one line at a time...     write your data on the proper line and compare it ...

not every line of data on this chart is used on every car..  but this is accurate for almost every gm and many other cars... including the new OBD2 cars...

why do you want to search for a USED scan tool

so you can diagnose your car....  i have run into SO many mechanics who ONLY know how to pull codes... don't know anything about looking at live data on OBD1 cars...

if they knew what they were doing.. do you think they would be selling you their scan tools?????

oh... and if you can do this... OBD2 cars are just as readable as OBD1 cars with a scan tool

if you have a 96 or newer...   you can get a harbor freight 98614.. or if you lucked out and got obd2 cables with the OTC scan tools...

just thought i would add a new chart.. one for TBI and one for Tuned port injection..

WARNING the TPS voltage on these charts is misleading..   you will need to find your exact years specs on the TPS voltage for base idle...

TPI L98 owners might want to include this manual in their computer files... so they have more info at hand.. it is covered in the factory service manual also... if you don't have a factory service manual...

Innova sells a scanner that works with ODB1 & 2 autos.
I found they sell for less on Ebay when I bought mine.
