So...

I have a 70 el camino with a 383 stroker pushing 475hp per my dyno sheet (engine only). I want to put an overdrive transmission in it, but am not sure what direction to go. I want to put a 200-4r in it, but everyone I talk to say 700r4...I have had absolutely zero luck with 700's in the past from a modified to an all stock vehicle...Any ideas, thoughts, input would be appreciated...

Have you considered a Chevy 4L80E Tranny? Toughest OD tranny out there and you can find them in the junkyard. You need a computer to run it or switch to a transgo manual valve body and not need a computer at all. You can also convert this tranny to a 6 speed.

find a better transmission supplier..

or go to a 4L80E... since that truck had a th400. there might be room for it..

providers...

200 4R ... probably the best is california performance automatic.. down in huntingtion beach as i recall..

700R4... hughes performance automatic in arizona..

there are a LOT of other builders out there..

warning.. both of these transmissions... need throttle lever extensions to change the center of the throttle shaft to the cable attachment center to 25MM or 1"  carbs originally for TH350 applications have a slightly longer distance by about a quarter inch.. so the throttle angle to amount of cable pulled is different..  

the throttle valve cable is also adjusted when the ratio is perfect by pulling back on the casing and then engine off opening the throttle fully.. this pulls the cable core tight and slips the adjustment to get it perfect...    when the ratio lever is not installed.. it pulls the cable out of adjustment leaving the line pressure too low for normal driving or even spirited driving .. the clutches will slip and the trans will fail sometimes in a single trip around the block..

in addition.. the biggest transmission oil cooler you can wedge infront of your radiator and a/c condenser...  if you keep the transmission oil temps below 170F the transmission will last for years and years and years...

oil cooler flow also needs to be verified at the return fittings at the transmission...

any restriction or blockage of the oil cooler flow will cause the sun gears and other components that are cooled and lubed only by the cooler flow to melt in almost exactly 15 miles...

depending on the percentage of restriction.

there are even billet components of the torque converters available to handle the increased power of todays engine builds..

the 200 4r is supposedly stronger as there are less holes drilled thru the input shaft to transfer lube around to where it needs to ***

depending on budget.. you can also go to an overdrive on the back of either a TH350 or a TH400.. this would get the RPMs back into the cruise range..

i don't know if this will help you... but its important knowledge to know...

be sure to talk with the transmission builders about your previous issues with transmissions to allow them to address those points so you don't get into the same issues..

+1 on Bowtie Overdrives, I have used their products with great success and they are very helpful when you call them. I have a 700R4 behind my 355 (425 Dyno HP) and have had absolutely no problems. I'd look for a different builder if you have had problems with 700's. It's NOT the tranny.

Thanks for all the input!

I'm excited to explore the possibilities of the 6spd 4l80e...

On another note, is there any aftermarket harness kit for an easy install into an A body, and do I need to update anything else, or just add the computer and power wire for the electronic shift/lockup?

Hi there,
 Yes!! A good builder is worth a few more bucks.
 Since mine did the linkage on the Barry grant//TH700
 6 years ago all I have done is to check the tension
 on the cable from time and lube the action. Good luck.
