Hey all.

Got a few questions that I can't seem to find answers to anywhere.

Bit of info before I proceed. The car is a 1987 camaro with p/s heater and ac delete. Motor going in is a carbed 1998 vortec 5.7.

1. I'd like to know if I can use a electric 35gpm 12volt, 7amp draw waterpump
(If so, what do I do about the "bypass" I keep reading about and can't make sense of)

2. Is there room in our cars to use a low mount passenger side alternator.

3. If using a electric water pump, do I buy a crank pulley and alternator bracket for a short water pump or long?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I would like to start buying parts and get this motor in asap

i dont think youll need to worry about the bypass if your heater is deleted?

not sure about the low mount alternator, but i would imagine you would have to lengthen the wires?

the 87s were long water pump with half v-belt, half serpentine.   id try to re-use what you have currently first.

ive considered the electric waterpump myself as i have an 87 iroc.  i do have PS and i added a flexfan.   id have to lose my flexfan and depend on the electric fans.   and of couse do some belt shopping.   just not sure if its worth it for the extra few ponies in my case.   if you do this, id appreciate a few pics and part numbers, especially for belts, if you get time.

Ok so the electric waterpump aside, Would I be correct in saying that my 1998 vortec block will accept any regular gen 1 small block water pump using a v-belt set up? And that long or short water pump is merely preference rather than a will or won't work situation?

I was considering the electric water pump but afte
r looking at prices im reconsidering it.
I refuse to use the old ugly dirty parts off the old stock motor and as a result am buying all new. Anyone know of a place I could purchase a nice w/pump low or mid passenger alt bracket and pulleys for a decent price?? Maybe as a kit??

im sure if you look around summit, jegs, or others, you can find pulleys.
 hope this helps?

Thanks again redneckjoe69.

I figured jegs and summit would be my best bet. However I am still unsure if I need a long or short set up. what decides that??

Sorry for such noob questions but i just dont know.

Thanks

your welcome.   lots of people helped me over the years, so i dont mind helping.
i suggested the long, standard rotation, waterpump cause thats what came on your car originally.  if you switch to a short waterpump, youll probably end up with belt alignment issues if using the factory alternator.   im guessing your gonna use the factory style alternator?
your vortec motor came with a reverse rotation waterpump.   unless you use the serpentine system with it, youll end up with cooling problems.
heres a pulley kit that should work.  expensive though.

what are your plans for a fan/fans?   the factory dual e-fans are set to turn on at 225 and 240 degrees!   too hot IMO.   i rigged up a toggle switch with inline fuse.   just gotta remember to turn them off, lol.

heres a site you might find helpful?   its all about 3rd gens.

Thank u very much for clarification on the water pump issue.

I'd like to not use the stock alt solely based on the fact that its stock and ugly. I'm in the middle of filling shaving and tucking my entire engine bay and plan on paint inside just as nice as it is outside. Having said that, a stock alt would look IMO out of place. I plan to buy a nice billet bracket and chrome alt.

As far as the fans go. I too plan on having them on a switch. Infact, would it be possible to have a panel of aviation style switches for say..fans. Fuel pump. Starter. ignition.??

As far as thirdgen goes, I am a member and there is tons of info there but I go there less and less. I find not enough people are willing to help a novice. And when and if they do post a reply its "use the search option" I posted the initial question in this thread on thirdgen 1 week prior to posting it here. Got A billion views but not 1 reply

have you looked on marches site?  they may have something you like?  looks like alot of theyre stuff uses the short waterpump.  id check with them for show quality parts.

yea, i see that on 3rd gen from time to time, "use the search bar". Tongue   it can be frustrating.  this site could always use some new friendly members.

sounds like your building a sweet ride. Cool   post some pics when you get time, id enjoy seeing them, and im sure others would too.

Scott, those switches look like they would do the job.   theres also a kit with a probe that inserts into the radiator fins, that will turn your fans on at a certain temp.

I haven't looked at marches site but will now thank u.

Those switches will definitely do the job. Thanks scott

I greatly appreciate all the help and advice guys. I find good help hard to find. Lol

With the plans i have for the car it should be rather nice. My theme if u will is race inspired show worthy. its hard to stand apart from every other third gen wothout being tacky or portraying the hillbilly stigma that comes along with them.

As it stands I feel I should be able to pull it off quite nicely.

I don't really know how to post pics but if someone could put me in the know I will gladly post my progress.

photobucket seems to work.  copy/paste the IMG code.

yea, 3rd gens have a ratty reputation, but i think theyre getting popular again.  its hard to find a super clean one anymore.

posting pics.
