I'm thinking about buying a short block with 10.74:1 compression was wondering if stock heads from a gen 1 sbc can take that

Without heads there is no compression ratio. Not all gen 1 heads are created equal. They come with chambers as small as 58cc or as large as 76cc. Later model heads will cause more problems than they will cure.

Hi there,
Before buying a complete short block check out the
 average 25/1000" deck height
IE from max piston top to block deck level. then
find out the cylinder size such as 64cc etc.
the rest is available by asking for scale or some
of these guys..Hi Gang!!  Good luck..

Static compression ratio is determined by piston dish or dome, then combustion chamber volume enters the final figure to consider, as well as head gasket thickness.
