Ok, as you can tell, i am in a serious debate, either, rebuild a 90's lt1, or trade it UN for a 383,  the lt1 needs a crank, intake , carb, and cam mainly, i have most of the other parts needed. Or i could trade it in for a 383 plus some cash. The lt1 is out of a 94 impala ss , i have 99 percent of every thing to make it run as if it were in the car right now. Intake, fuel rails, you name it, i have it, except for i know, the little shaft to run the dist. The guy i got it from pulled it out of the car cuz of a lower end knock, that's where a new crank comes in to play, if i rebuild the lt1 or get an older sbc, its going in an 86 z28. Any suggestions?

My son has an 86 Monte Carlo SS. Back 10 years he was in the same place as you. I went over the options with him. He purchased a 260/350 from the GM dealer in town. We pulled it apart:

We installed a Hydraulic Flat Tappet Cam. With Roller rockers. The Monte Carlo SS has a big engine bay. I modified a Z-28 oil pump, blueprinted it, and installed a 7 quart Milodon oil pan I had.
I had a Brand new set of 186 Casting GM cylinder heads. We used a 1.94"/1.60" valves. I went bigger on the exhaust valve, GM heads suffer on the exhaust port.  I had my son do some port work, and just matched the intake and exhaust ports. We kept the heads simple. I checked them for flatness. The compression ratio was 10:2:1 just great for Hi Octane gas.
We used an old Holley street/strip intake manifold, and installed a Holley P/N R4778 700cfm. We rejetted it and installed .110 Viton Needle and seat.
An old vacuum advance GM HEI, just played with the weights.
The car had a 3:73 Posi Rear. So it was in the power of the cam at 65MPH.
He did purchase a TCI TH350 Street Fighter trans. The 2004R was toast. I had him install a seperate transmission oil cooler. It added 2 quarts more fluid.
Thats about it, and it was a real nice street car. He hasn't used it in awhile, I'll bet the next thing that breaks, is the little 7.5" rear.

I had a 95 Camaro with an LT1 in it. I had some head work done and added 2.02/1.60 valves. I put new hydraulic rollers and a slightly hotter cam in it, plus roller rockers. It ran pretty good at 8.57 86mph in the 1/8th which was 1/2 second and 6 mph better than stock with headers. I estimated that it took about 325hp at the flywheel to reach that speed in the 1/8th as speed is a good estimator of hp figuring the weight of the car vs mph. The stock heads are decent and they are aluminum. The LT is a good engine, the only disadvantage of the LT is the distributor which is mounted in the front of the engine at the bottom near the crank. It is subject to failure and a weak link. MSD makes a replacement for this opti spark dud.

Well, i have the stock dist. but i was looking into getting an intake with an old skool style intake with the hei dist. And maybe a 600 double or a 750 single pump.  I'm hoping for about 350hp when its said and done with the lt.. I still have my 79 camaro, and i'm putting that engine in a 78 z with a 4 speed, i'll end up stroking it in a few years, i have some 186 heads, with the 2.02 /1.60's with 64 on the chambers. But the thing is, idk what would be easier and cheaper for the power, yeah know?

I'd end up using an old school style intake with an hei  dist. Would it be easier to rebuild the lt1 or buy an older sbc? What would be smarter in the long run?

That take with the hei will solve the opti spark problem.
To get to 350 hp you would need a more radical cam than what I used + the port work and other mods I mentioned with the LT1.
The money question depends on what you can get the 350 for. I would guess to match the performance of the LT you would have to spend in the 4000 dollar range.
Rebuilding the LT + the other mods should run in the 3000-4000 dollar range.

the impala lt1 is iron heads, correct?
after owning an lt1 in a 93 camaro i can give you my opinion.  ill never buy another one.  everything is stupid expensive for them.  a very unreliable motor in stock form.  since the lt1 you mentioned needs work,...id run from it.  your money is better spent building the stroker.  youll end up with more bang for the buck.

Yes iron heads, well, joe, what do you mean, sell me yours ? I'm trying to do this cheaply and easily lol, it didn't need much work? Just buy a crank. And i can hone it myself, port the heads. Stuff like that is no big deal. I've done some math on it and for about a grand I can have it running for the most part.

If you have to buy a crank anyway, why not get a long arm and have more fun?! Have both, a stroked LT1.

Cost to cut and bore the block is still there, plus the cost of  stroker crank setup.

i would honestly consider stepping into LS territory before dumping any money on the LT.    when its all said and done, the LT is still just a 350.     i considered doing the HEI swap, but theres no way to drop the dizzy in a 4th gen without pulling the motor.   LTs in 3rd gens are a common swap.   most keep the fuel injection though.  the decesion is yours.   its cool to talk pros and cons.   have you priced an LT waterpump or dizzy?  they get expensive.   so do starters.   interestingly, the LT starters are lightweights,...like a factory high torque mini-starter, and will bolt right up to gen 1 engines.  i believe the 153 tooth pattern.   not positive, but arent the iron head LTs lower compression then the aluminum head version?   just some things to consider.
what tranny are you gonna run with the z28?  just curious.

Well, I Found A 355 With All The Pieces Torn Apart For A Couple Hundred, Minus About 50 OR So For My Shotgun Too, So I'll End Up Gettimg That And Stroking It! Haha. Lol. But I Talked To My Dad About It, He Told Me ToMake A Street Friendly Drag Car From It, So, Later On, I'm Thinking Big Block, But For Now, Just A Low Powered 350 As A Base Point, And Slowly Work On My Light Skills And Stuff Like That,I'd EndUpPutting ATh350/400 In It WHen I Put The Newer Engine In it. But Thank Yall For All The Talking And Info Y'allHave Given Me, It always SendToHelpOut. MyPhoneIsBeingRetardedAnd capitalizing MostOfMyWords. AnyWay, WhatDoYall ThinkAboutThat? AndSell The Lt1 ForABout 500?
