I just got my new MSD Atomic injection kit from Summit today. It's going in my 69 Malibu. 355 small block, comp roller cam,1.6 roller rockers Edelbrock RPM heads, edelbrock RPM air gap intake, MSD ignition and distributor, 700R4 trans and 3.73 gears It dynoed@ 425 HP when I built it last year. I have gotten up to 20 mpg with the Edelbrock 670 cfm carb (on the freeway cruising at 2000rpm). Has anyone out there had any experience with the MSD fuel injection set up yet? I'm pretty excited to get it on and running, hook ups look pretty simple. I'm assuming better fuel management and maybe a little better mileage and an increase (small) in torque and HP. What do you think?

If I was in your shoes I would be jumping on that unit too. I wouldn't wait to get going. 20MPG isn't bad. My 86 Monte Carlo with a 2004R gets 20 to 22 MPG with a completly stock set-up. It makes 180HP compaired to your 425.

You should see when you have it all tuned up a 5MPG increase. On a 16 gallon tank thats 80 miles more.  4 More gallons of fuel X $3.65 thats almost $15.00 more bucks in your pocket...Let us know how you make out...Good Luck...

im curious to see how you make out.   ive read some mixed reviews, but have no first hand experience.   will you be going back to the dyno after some time, to see if you gained any power?

heres a link to a thread about the atomic EFI.

Read the thread, last post was over a year ago. One guy liked it and one guy had nothing but trouble. I'm taking an automotive electronics course at my local community college and my instructor told me I can bring the Malibu into the shop and do the install there. (SCORE!!)

got started on the project, old fuel system out, new one in. the MSD fuel system kit came with everything I needed, mounted the pump in the same spot as the old fuel pump and ran the 3/8th fuel line up to the motor. Started to put the throttle body on the manifold and discovered it just might be a little easier to get all the necessary vaccuum fittings put on BEFORE I mount the throttle body. One item might be a challenge though, the adaptor for the TV cable for the 700R4 from my carb doesn't fit on the throttle arm for the throttle body. Car is in the shop at school so I have to wait until tuesday to work on it.

thats neat.   you get to go to school and work on your own car.    dont get much better then that.    you should put up a few pics as you go.   somebody might look this up one day on a search?

I will, it's going ok so far. One thing though 40 year old cars don't have original wiring so I am having to trace wires to find which ones I need for the new system.fortunately I already have the MSD ignition and distributor so it's pretty easy. I'm just taking it slow.

Install is moving along, a little slower than I thought but MSD has a good tech line and they answer every question quickly. I only get 3 hours a day to work on it in the shop at school but that's ok. Having a hoist and a tool room full of stuff is a big plus. I should have it buttoned up tomorrow. It's winter and I don't drive it anyway this time of year.

for the throttle valve cable adaptor...

call the MSD and ask them about if the current throttle lever is for the 700R4 already..

i seem to recall that the CENTER of the throttle shaft to the center of the TV hook up pin is 25MM...

its shorter than for the TH350 length..

this is a critical adjustment..   if the lever is too long. it pulls the cable too far and too fast..

since the adjustment involves pulling the casing backwards by depressing the latch.. then moving the throttle to WOT as the slack is taken up.. the movement you have created pulls the casing forward just slightly..

with the wrong length from center.  will destroy your transmission in a single trip around the block...  why.. the line pressure that controls the shift points and the engagement of the clutches inside the transmission is too low and they slip.. causing rapid transmission failure..

wiring looks straight forward.. but if you have questions.. do ask...

some of us like me have wiring diagrams for these models and can talk you thru the circuits easily.. explaining them to you...

No need, got it all hooked up today, went down the checklist to see if I missed anything, hit the key and it fired right up! Went through all the instructions as written. Entered all the info it asked for on the hand held controller and NO PROBLEMS....so far. Still waiting for a callback on the TV cable adaptor and that's all that is left. Took a few days because of limited time in the shop at school.

Your doing a commercial for MSD. You should give them a holler and let them know. Glad to hear things are looking out....
