I am about to tackle my first engine build and have no idea where to start. I have a block with the  3970010 cast number in a 80 k1500 truck. It will be goin in a k5 blazer when built but I have no clue as to what performance parts I need. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

first, decide what the blazer is going to be used for when you use it the most. as it is a blazer, you will more likely want to have low and mid range TORQUE. the horsepower comes with the torque. the power should be kept to max of 5500 as it will then be able to take advantage of the 4wd. design the engine to work WITH the blazer, not against it.

Vandi11 welcome to CHP.

www.caretechbooks.com Look through what they have for starter books.

1.You will need Engine assembly tools, and good tools get expensive

2.That year engine started with the early smogger chocked heads. Then the real lightening of the heads. They are prone to cracking. When you get the valve covers off send the P/N's to us. I can tell you if they are any good.

3.If your just doing a good rebuild, and want to up the horse power a little.

4.A K5 Blazer will need some torque and horse power. Your on the right forum for help. (As long as we don't hear you want 600 RWHP). Seems to be the thing going around these days and pizzing some guys off...LOL...

5.The P/N 3970010 just ells us that its a 4" bore block. You will need to get the pan off to determine if you have a 4 bolt block.

For under 500hp, NO boost or other power adder, the stock crank will work as long as it's not damaged now, or can be fixed such as turned to smooth things out.

I will be using it to pull my four wheeler trailer and to do a lil playing in the mud sometimes. But not gonna be puttin anything bigger than a 33 inch tire on it and I'm not wanting a high hp engine. Just something mild with decent torque

What kind of budget do you have for this?

You could go as low as $1000 or as high as the moon or anywhere in between.

We can GUESS 3.08:1 if it's alomst exactly 3 or GUESS 3.42:1 if it's 3 and then a little or so more. Then there's also the 3.23:1 possibility. It's easy to guess and get it wrong.

I'm pretty sure it's gonna be the 3:08 gears.

Those are good for milage but not much help for performance. It'd be nice to have an overdrive trans too.

maybe before you start spending money, it would be a good idea to have the block checked out and see if it needs any work?

basic performance parts for a mud truck,....dual plane intake, mild cam, headers, off-road carb, good cooling system, etc.    but id start out at the machine shop first.   get your block prepped.    do you have heads?   might wanna have them checked out too?   part numbers for the heads?
