You could get 400hp out of a 400 sbc very easily.  Depending on weather or not u already have a block I'm assuming $1500+? Some decent heads an aggressive cam a nice set of headers ect... Should fetch you 400+ hp with ease. From what I have seen on this forum I'm sure that their will be a few more detailed and intelligent answers to follow. GL with ur future build!

Induction.

Heads, cam, carb, the correct rear gear. Edelbrock makes some nice packages. Just make sure the engine your doing the work to has a good foundation to start with... Thats a must.

+1 Check out those packages as they go well together.
Should not be rocket science to get 400 hp out of a 400 cu in motor.
Do a basic rebuild on the short block and then add the heads, cams, and induction package.

IMO, it'd take a couple of knucklehead moves to NOT get 400hp from a 400/406.

As said at least three times, head/cam/intake choices will get there and probably then some.

Edelbrock heads, shy of the Victor series, are good entry level heads. Even their Performer RPM heads have better alternatives for similar money from equally well-known, equally well-established, American companies, whose heads flow more/better for the same intake runner volume...170cfm. I say this because I have a pair, had them for many years, like them, but if I was to do it again, I'd go with AFR, Brodix, or Dart. JMOs FWIW

Hi there,
The early SBC 400s only came out with 265 hp
with a very good reason..The blocks were crap
and with costly experience I would advise you
to check out the block casting number and consider
sonic testing it.440" on one side of the standard
bore and .120" on the other does NOT impress for a
high winding 400HP - 406 despite the incedible potential
of a DECENT Block.
Have been with one with only 180TFS heads in a '55 Chevy
4 door with TH700 and 3.7 diff and it Flew..HP guesstimate
was 410HP with 450 torque..A very nice combo done properly.

.. For info, just go to the other thread you started here 5 days earlier asking the same question:

http://forums.chevyhiperformance.com/70/9327346/car-engine/want-to-build-a-406

.. 400 blocks have siamesed cylinder walls, so cylinders #1, #2, #7 and #8 are all going to have about 0.120+" wall thickness to the outside front/rear of the block and about 0.440" wall thickness of the bores toward the center of the block...

.. Cheapest way to get 400 HP from a SBC 400" is add domed pistons, mild cam, headers... (4 bbl. carb. and intake if not already equipped) this gets you to or close to 400 HP by about a mere 5500 RPMs... Lots of other ways to go higher for more money...

.. I bought a new '75 Monte back in '74... red with white vinyl interior and white vinyl top... nice, smooth car... totally reliable... horrible low compression mid-1970's 350" engine performance... only 10 - 13 MPG best with my wife's easy, mostly country driving even with the optional 2:41 highway rear end... went to my Mom and then my brother who drove it till the body/frame rusted off it... never any engine or tranny problems, though... I was never enthused over its confused styling, seemed like GM just did what connected the wheels and bumpers together... I wanted a station wagon for my intended married active outdoor lifestyle, wife wanted the Monte for her intended lifestyle... LOL! I had the Pinto, GMC pickup, and Ducati dirtbike, so guess I had to give in...
