ok, so i'm browsing through on jegs for new rearend pieces: gears, instalation kits, lockers/posi diffs. you get what im talking about, well anyway, i come to a stand still for what to actually get, BECAUSE, i dont know the proper size for the 10 i have, 1979 Camaro Berlinetta.. is it a 7.5/7.625, 8.2, or 8.5/8.6.. then also the spline count.. 28, 30 or 31? idk.. it's the stock rear end..

Your Camaro should have an 8.5" ring gear. The newer style. That covered 1970 to 1981. With the bigger pinion bearing. In 1982 it changed again. I have a 1979 and a 1981 Z-28, and they both have 10 bolt covers, with the bigger ring gear. You will have to count the teeth on the ring gear and count the teeth on the pinion to get the gear ratio. Then divide the pinion teeth into the ring gear teeth, and thats your gear ratio. Divide the pinion teeth into the ring gear teeth, and that is your rear gear ratio. FOR EXAMPLE ONLY: If you have a 2:68 rear gear ratio, I would say you have a series (#2) carrier. Usually any gear ratio above a 3:08 requires a series(#3) carrier. So if you have a 2:68 gear ratio. To change to a 3:70 gear ratio you will need a series (#3) carrier....Hope this helps. I know its a little confusing, but that's what GM did not only with the 10 bolt, but with the 12 bolt also.

I only said that Joe. Guys will pick up a used set of Gears at a swap meet. Then they pull everything apart to find out the gear doesn't fit. The seller doesn't know if for only knows its for a Camaro? The early Camaro had the smaller OD on the pinion shaft. The 69 and later Camaro's had the bigger OD on the pinion shaft. That was all. If anyone needs pinion bearing size let me know! I hope I didn't confuse anyone. There are (2) different size pinion bearing shafts. Thanks Bob

I'm going to post the different sizes just to be clear.

THE EARLY CAMARO WITH THE 8.2 Ring GEAR. The pinion shaft OD is 1.438" THE LATER CAMARO WITH THE 8.5 RING GEAR. The pinion shaft OD is 1.625" The smaller Ring gear for the Camaro, Monte Carlo, Cutlass, etc with a 7.50 Ring Gear the OD of the pinion shaft is 1.438"

Strange still sells the ring gear spacer if you need it. It is $45.00.

I hope this clears up anything I've said. thanks Bob

yeah it does, thanks you guys. a TQ convertor(about 3000rpm stall i'm thinking), rear gear, posi diff., and install kit will make my car a little more mean if i'm not mistaken?

Putting a lower (higher numerical) gear in and you get the gear to match where your cam starts making power, and its like the tortuse and the hare. It will kick you in your Arrzz.

im running a comp 274 cam in it right now.. and thats what im going to hold on too for quite some its power range is 1800 to 6000. if im not mistaken. i have a 2000 stall convertor on it right now
