I have a 1950 Plymouth Coupe and need to swap out rear axle. Its a 60 inch axle on the Plymouth. Need a comparable chevy axle that will give me street, Highway performance with a 350 or 454. Stan Confused

Stan:
Are you talking replacing the complete rear. If you are I would look for a 9" Ford. They have so many different gears to set you up. It will also depend on how tall is your tires? Then figure in the trans. OD or not. Idealy you want to be 1600 to 1800RPm at 60MPH.

Yeah Bob, want to replace the whole shabang. Problem is im just more or less a rookie at this and want to make it as simple as possible. Thats why i was thinking an already setup chevy axle where all i got to do is maybe measure a driveshaft. Just need to know what year chevy axle 60in  back plate to back plate would work. I like the Ford axle idea also but then i gotta change things on that.. Dont plan on a strip machine, and really dont need 411 0r 456 just a simple posi 373 will work/ Any help is appreciated... I'd suggest you go to a local wrecking yard with a tape measure and find one that will match the width you are looking for and then narrow that down by matching the spring perches (probably won't find an exact match) Some have ratios on a tag others you will have to count teeth on the ring and pinion gears and divide ring by pinion (40/10=4.00) BIG cars and station wagons usually have lower gear ratios. Good luck.

Sorry I didn't back to you sooner. The ZMAN has you covered. If its a wide rear 60" you will need an older junk yard. The older Big Ford Station wagons and Big Galaxies had wide rears. Again as ZMAN said some have tags on them. Maybe you'll get lucky and find a posi rear.If your not really going to torture it the Ford 8.8" would help you also. You want to stick with a Ford 8.8"or 9". There are so many different gear ratios to choose from too.
Thanks

look at "Identify 9 inch Ford" on Google there is a list of ford rears and their widths and how to or where to look to find what they have, and you are looking to swap a whole rear so the Bolt pattern may be your hang up.when you look at the Google offerings there are other sites to see GM and Chrysler stuff too!
