Fresh rebuild bottom to top. The only difference new Cam..Edelbrock Performer Plus
3702 LG4/tbi. Lift 398"/442"..adv. duration 244/264..idle-5500 rpm. New 1.5 stamp
steel rollers. Timing off computer runs great about 18 degree. When hook to computer running at idle rpm is up and down miss fires and stalls. I jack up idle to 1000 to 1100 it will stay running adjust distributor to 0 to 2 degrees it runs
great and then timming starts bouncing all over and then back to 0. At idle motor seems like exhaust is comming back thru intake. I installed HD headers and new
02 sensor and high flow cat. Good grounds, vacuume, new plugs wires cap ect. It acts likes it looses signal from computer. Driving me CRAZY.. Please help, I'll try any suggestion. Thanks

first... did you get all the ground wires hooked up properly .. to places cleaned of paint..
there is a bunch of things to check..   you would not believe how many cars i have fixed in person by cleaning and verifying proper ground connections...

battery negative cable to the front of the block
battery negative terminal smaller cable to the body...
engine block to the body...

there are 2 or 3 wires out of the fuel injection harness that connect to the engine.. one or two to the intake manifold.. at least ONE to the back of one of the heads..  these ground different items..

you will want to set base timing and lock it there.. not try to outsmart the computer...
bring the damper up to the proper timing mark as described on the label.. does not matter which way the rotor is pointing for this one..   remove cap...  if the damper is at the base timing mark.. 0, 10, 15 before... the tips of the reluctor should line up perfectly with the pick up coil...

while in there.. take a bright flashlight.. look straight down the middle of the distributer shaft... is the exposed black magnet under the riveted on stamped steel reluctor cracked?? if it is.. you will need to change the distributer...

how does it run with the timing connector unplugged.. it could be under the hood or inside the cab above the carpet on the right foot well... again described on the emission label...

ps... i work on a LOT of TBI fuel injection systems..  there are a bunch of things. and they have to be RIGHT for the system to work properly...

do you have any friends with an OBD1 scan tool.. so you can look at the live data stream...  this will help a LOT... warning.. most of the newer parts store scan tools that say.. obd2 and obd1 only read codes on obd1... and thats not enough to really get it running properly...

eventually you will need to change away from the ONE wire oxygen sensor to a 3 or a 4 wire oxygen sensor...   the output signal is the same.. but the distance from the exhaust is going to bite you.. as the one wire oxygen sensor needs to be heated by the exhaust.. the 3 and 4 wire oxygen sensors don't needs as much exhaust heat so they can be installed in the collectors... all the later model cars use heated oxygen sensors ..

let me find some more info...

check the grounds..

why would a cracked distributer reluctor cause timing crazyness...  because of the way the ignition module and the ECM use the signal.. it uses the pulse to trigger the NEXT spark..  not this one... they can use a timer to count down from the previous pulse to open the power transistor when they want it to advance or retard the timing...    cracked magnets in the reluctor or pick up coil cause ghost signals to be created and this confuses the timing count down ..  causing random ignition sparks......     this system works great except for worn bushings in the upper housing allowing the reluctor tips to hit the pick up coil.. and the cracks from thermal cycling or impacts to the distributer..

i just got up and looked in my emissions manual.. 1989 chevy V8 small block TBI motors are timing at TDC...  so align the damper and the timing pointer at TDC... remove the distributer cap.. rotate the distributer slightly till the tips of the reluctor and the pick up coil align..  lock the hold down bolt.. that should fix the timing issue..

while you are up on top of the motor...    reach down and grab the throttle lever...  open it slightly..  wiggle the lever to wiggle the throttle shaft while looking at where it enters the throttle body.. if it moves more than a TINY fraction of an inch.. and i have seen some move almost 1/8 of an inch..  you will need to find a replacement throttle body thats not so worn or have that rebushed ... so there is a perfect closing to the exact same angle each time... this is to allow the TPS to close to the exact minimum voltage each time.. if it does not..  the computer will freak out and not return to the IDLE program ... instead being in the off idle program where the air fuel mixture is richer.. and the timing is moving around.. awaiting your increased movement of the throttle..

in this TBI diagram.. i see grounds that are connected to the engine at terminals D6 for the oxygen sensor and A12... for the entire computer system...   A11 and A12 are both grounds.. but A11 is probably grounded through the computer circuit board to A12...

Thank you for such a fast responce..I have a new distributor cumming.
I did look at the inside the distributor and seen alot of rust. Being the
truck sat around inside garage 3- years. I looking for the groung in back of
motor like u said. Great dia of ecm this will also help. I do have an ob1
but lent it to a buddy and not sure which one...YET.

You follow Wayne's schematics, and he'll get you fixed up. The grounds on the older OBD1 ECM's are very critical. Look for them at the rear of the heads to the firewall or to the chassis, you may even have a broken ground you can't see.
You can make a couple up and with some #10 gauge wire or if you don't have #10 wire, I've doubled 2 #16 gauge wires together. Just use a Good Crimping tool. You can go from the back of the head to the firewall. Just sratch the paint off. If you want do it on both heads.

i should mention that the REMAN distributers from A1 Cardone have a different pickup coil and reluctor on the shaft... a far superior design to the stamped steel GM design..

if you can get your scan tool back.. this is a chart that will give you an idea of what the data values should be...  you will want to print this.. its for TBI motors..

I had a friend who's Dad had a 1967 Pontiac LeMans. He had the transmission replaced. Since then he swears the floor shifter gets hard too move. The engine started hard when left overnight. I'm thinking he has 2 problems.
So the dealer replaced 2 cables. Long story short. When they replaced the trans they let the engine hang by the motor mounts. They stressed the copper ground wire from the head.
He asked if I would look at it. He actually bought another cable. Well as soon as I touched the bare end of the shifter cable it was warm to touch, "Wierd you say yes". Why didn't the other techs feel the warm cable??? BUA Brain Up Arrzz
The engine ground was broken, and the battery was looking for a positive ground somewhere. It found the shfter cable, and the heat generated over a short period of time fraded the inside of the cable. So it was hard to move. There was a piece of the outside cover on the shifter that had started to melt.
I've seen a lot of crazy things. A friend has had a repair shop for the 38 years I've known him. He would call me when he got something that was strange or out of the ordinary.

this is the first test to check the condition of the various battery and engine ground cables.. it does not check the ground cables to the computer unless you individually test that circuit.. print this and tape it to a wall or to the side of your tool box..  i made it an image so its easy to print

Voltagedroptesting

this is the REMAN cardone distributer.. for most of the V8 TBI motors.. az stores usually have these in stock.. i don't know what store you buy from..

WAYNEP your awesome... Found missing ground. Ground that comes thru under heater hoses was off. Installed to back of the head.
Installed new distributor and Cleaned up all grounds and It fired right up. Set
timing too 0 and holds rock steady and idles great. BUT.. Have a problem..
Cant get rid of the hesitation. Once pass the hesitation it runs Great.
Hook me up Guys........Brian

Brian your welcome. Glad your problem was small, but one that will make you pull your hair out...LOL... Fluke is a good meter. Of course depending on the model you have.

as posted above.... try this....

while you are up on top of the motor...    reach down and grab the throttle lever...  open it slightly..  wiggle the lever to wiggle the throttle shaft while looking at where it enters the throttle body.. if it moves more than a TINY fraction of an inch.. and i have seen some move almost 1/8 of an inch..  you will need to find a replacement throttle body thats not so worn or have that rebushed ... so there is a perfect closing to the exact same angle each time... this is to allow the TPS to close to the exact minimum voltage each time.. if it does not..  the computer will freak out and not return to the IDLE program ... instead being in the off idle program where the air fuel mixture is richer.. and the timing is moving around.. awaiting your increased movement of the throttle..

IF YOUR throttle shaft bore is NOT WORN.. and most are....  some worse than others.. this is because the linkage pulls.. from the back.. but the spring is also on the back.. so its always pulling against the back of the bore on the drivers side..

hesitation off idle... and on acceleration can also be...

missing ground .. yes.. another on the TPS circuit and the  this is usually connected to the intake... do you have a piercing test clip for your digital volt meter... so you can use the 20 volt DC scale first.. probe the black wire to the TPS and ground.. you should have less than. 0.03 volts.. if it shows 0.00... change the meter setting to 2 volts DC and recheck... an expected reading is 0.02.. 0.01... perhaps.. 0.00...  but usually you will get the slightly higher reading do to the length of wire..

now...   20 volts DC scale...    black to GREY wire on the TPS.. should be really close to 5.0 volts DC.. if not exactly 5.0 volts.. minimum is 4.97...

another test is the TPS voltage signal back to the computer..

black wire to the dark blue wire...  this is variable voltage... 0.50 to 0.96 volts at idle.. throttle closed... please operate the throttle several times... each time.. the voltage should drop back to the EXACT MINIMUM voltage...  exact is EXACT....    no variations...

somewhere above 4.0... to 4.8 is wot..

now.. that you have proven the TPS drops back to the same voltage.. engine off key on now..

while watching your meter... still hooked to the black and the dark blue wire.. slowly open the throttle... till you get to wide open.. and slowly close the throttle.. you should have a steady increase.. or a steady decrease... NO SPIKES UP OR DOWN...  if you get spikes.. where the voltage drops out.. or becomes higher for a split second.. replace the TPS..

you need to do a similar test on the MAP sensor...

please verify that the tube to the map sensor is NOT clogged... or restricted... its usually rigid nylon tubing with short molded rubber adaptors on the ends.. this relays a good fast change in vacuum to the MAP sensor.. so the computer knows instantly there are changes in the vacuum.. it also needs to be hooked to manifold vacuum.  there is a specific port for the MAP sensor usually... sometimes its on a TEE ..  check your emission label diagram.. if you don't have one. let me know..

another thing... was this truck equipped with a 305??? and you swapped in a 350... without increasing injector flow rates...

this is simple to fix.. swap in some 350 injectors...  acceleration other than really slowly..  drops the system into open loop.. where the system relys on preprogrammed fuel control...

if the injectors are too small.. it won't have enough fuel being injected to enrich the air fuel ratio and the system won't know it as it does not look at the oxygen sensors in open loop..

if you have installed a 383.. you might want to really want to think about finding some police version caprice injectors.. from a 9c1 police special.. they have a larger flow rate...

i have a color and part number chart someplace.. i will look around for it today...
