Which torque converter

I have a 396 motor matched up to a TH350.  The rear gears are 273's and the torque converter I have is a 2800 stall.  Right now the car won't really spin the tires or jump from a standstill.  I'm sure the rear end has something to do with that but would changing the torque converter help it jump off the line a little quicker?  Was hoping not to change the rear end gearing. Any help would be great.  Thanks.

change the gears to 3.42, leave the convertor, if you're using it mostly for the street

if the vehicle is mostly used for strip action then go to 4.11 gears

2.73 is a highway gear and made to help gas mileage but it kills acceleration.
The higher rear end ratio will definetly help your acceleration but not your mileage.
A higher stall converter will help acceleration but that extra slip also makes more heat, you will need a tranny cooler, and you will get less mileage with that change too.

nicebird76.

Dave and Scott have you covered.

Put in a 3:73:1 rear gear, with the TH350 and 2800 convertor.

A seperate transmission oil cooler as big as you can get.

Then once the gears are changed you will think your in a different car. The feeling you will have will be worth the gear change.

You will melt the rear tires, believe me.

No taller then a 30" tall tire.

If you do run your car at the strip. Limit the RPM from 6200 to 6500 MAX-RPM. Big Blocks unless modified for high RPM really don't really like high RPM. Just remember that.... Grin  Cool

Bob is right you will not think it is the same car with 3.73 gears. Then you will want to stop the wheelspin and get sticky tires, and the list is endless.

i agree with everybody else.   changing gears will get you off the line quicker.   it probably wont cost more money to change gears than buy a good high stall converter anyway.  maybe cheaper?   what cam are you running?   if its a long duration cam,...its probably gonna be a dog down low with those rear gears.  JMO.

yea, what Joe said. I'm thinkin if you have enough torque to accelerate quickly with 2.73 gears, you probly have enough torque to blow the tires off...there's a fine line between the two.

a relatively mild motor with good gearing will accelerate well as long as traction is present

JMOs...food for thought

Hey everyone, thanks for the help on this. I think I'll start with changing the gears and go from there.  I do use my car for street and not strip so I may go with the 3:42's instead of the 3:73's just so I can drive a little ways without having to fill up. I can already burn tread but not much so I just want a little more.  Thanks.

that's a good place to start

then save your pennies for an overdrive trans, you'll have better acceleration AND better fuel milage.

Thanks. I like the idea of a different trans.  I'll have to save up to that.
