How do you determine a engine over heating after replacing the fan, and thermostat? the temp gauge goes up and down and sometimes stays high

infrared thermometer... 25 to 40 bucks...   point and shoot at various engine and cooling system parts.. temp will display in F or C on the display..  its so much more accurate than trying to fry an egg on the intake manifold..  or even bake cookies...  as the cookies always end up tasting like gasoline for some reason...

please use care in selecting which one you buy..  some don't have as wide a useable range as others... so read the specs..

Temperature range: -27 to 482 degrees F (-33 to 250 degrees C)

Temperature range: -4°F (-20°C) to 968°F (520°C)

Temperature range -31 to 689 degrees Fahrenheit

these are a few of the temp ranges..

what temp thermostat???   160, 180, 192F.. ????

and how hot.. once you get the infrared thermometer..    oh.. they work good for cooking and other various home things.  like how hot is that hot water pipe..

when you say replaced the fan..   did you replace the fan blade??? or the FAN clutch as that model came with a thermostatic fan clutch..   those only work properly with a 180 or a 192 thermostat..

if you attempt to use a fan clutch with a 160 thermostat.. the stat will be wide open and the coolant circulating through the radiator so fast before the bimetallic spring can engage the fan clutch by diverting the silicone oil between the discs inside..

do you have a fan shroud???

do you have 50% to 70% anti freeze blend in the cooling system

does the radiator cap hold pressure????

got pictures... hold the camera up by the hood latch and aim downward... so we can see the entire engine bay... and some from the sides...

well as far as the fan goes i replaced my old clutch fan with a flex fan, radiator cap is about a couple months old, so is the thermostat the car overheats to about 220 degrees and when i turn it off u can hear it bubbling does it sound like a radiator issue or an thermostat issue

make sure your fan/blades face the same direction as the fan you took off.

another thing,...how far is your fan from the radiator now?   usually the clutch puts the fan closer to the rad.   you may need to purchase a spacer to get it closer to the rad.  they come in many different thicknesses & usually come with longer bolts.        too far away or behind the shroud & it wont do very much.

The fuel filter should be in the fuel line of Q-Jet going into the carb. There is a 1" nut and use a 5/8 line wrench when removing the fuel line. Be carefull not to stripe or crossthread it. It is a fine thread and will cross thread in a heart beat.

Usually if your engine is surging or sometime bucking under light throttle, and at cruising speed. Heres how to check the EGR Valve.

You can disconnect the EGR vacuum line and either pinch the line or put the end of a #2 phillips screw driver in the end. You want to plug the vacuum line. Take the car for a ride if the surging or bucking problem you had goes away. Replace the EGR valve.

ok i have about two more small issues that i cnt figure out, ok my car is losing vac out of the carb somewhere and i dnt kno where, i even sprayed carb cleaner on every vac line source and still dont hear a change in the motor running but when ever i spray inside the carb the rpms start to rise what does this sound like? i have to hold my foot on the gas to keep it running

1.Are you sure thats not being choked off. Is the choke staying closed and your not pulling air though the carb. If the RPM changes when you spray carb clean in it. It's reacting to what your doing, and it must be getting air maybe not enough to keep runing.

2. Or your engine is running out of gas. The Q-Jets have a small inlet filter located in the frony of the carb. You can't miss it. It has a 1" nut going into the carb with a 5/8th's nut on the fuel line. I suggest that first.

3.The fuel pump is starting to die.

Have you tried adjusting the idle speed screw? Are the idle bleeds set correctly? Do you have a vacuum gauge?
