I have a 1962 Chevy Bel Air. Can I change the gear from a 308 to a 355 using the same carriage? It is a drop out center section.

Pinion is not reaching deep enough to the ring gear and has the right crush sleeve. I have a 327/300,small journal. When I store it for the winter, the motor will be built to about 500 hp. Not sure what is going to be done with it yet. Thanks

If you are not planning on beating it the rear will work ok with 3.55 gears. Those older rear ends weren't too strong. 500 HP kind of much for that old style rear end, they got raced a lot pre 64 though. Some of the pros on here might have some tips to help you out though.

it is mainly going to be used for cruises and show. Now and then a hole shot is all. Nothing to beat the motor up or anything like that.

im not real familiar with that rear but, are there different pinion shims you can use to get the desired mesh?

We ran that rear in our 55 Chevy with pretty good sucess.
We shifted our 327 at 8000 and launched at 4500 with 5.57 gears, and
small for today, 8" slicks and never blew it.

yes there are different shims and after measuring, I would have had to use approx. 1/4 inch of shims. That will blow the rear end in a hear beat. That's why I am thinking there MIGHT be a different carrier for this car and gear. Thanks for the input. I can use all the info I can get.

Come to find out, I ordered the gears and bearing kit from a racing supply store and I double check the parts #'s and all was for a stock 62 Chevy Bel Air. Ended up they had the wrong kit listed  along with wrong bearings and a wrong crush sleeve. Buyers beware when ordering. Make very sure it all matches. Thanks for all of your inputs. I could not return the kit because they said they had been used. There went $150.00 down the drain.
