Headers burning plug wires on SB .327

Have a .327 with Edelbrock Performer RPM heads with straight plugs and Hooker Comp ong tube headers. I keep burning spark plug wires. Anyone have experience with ceramic plug boots? Do they work?

where are you burning them...

at the base or the elbow of the boot???  there are metal heat shields that slip on stock thickness boots..  taylor

taylor also makes a 135 degree angle 2571  and another called a 180.. probably straight  2572...

you can get thermotech sleeves

there is a different version 14200... straight above the 90 degree boot..

then there is firesleeving.. this is over 100 bucks for a 5 foot roll.. if you are lucky.. you might find some in an aircraft surplus store.. depending on where you live...

This last engine I built had the same problem and I used the short accel spark plugs and problem solved.

Burnin them at the elbow. Have Accel shorty plugs with abestos sleeves now and still are burnin them. Your advice is just what I am looking for. Thx so much.

header wrap can make a big difference too, if you have clearance.

I opted to try Accel Ceramic 9000 wire set. I found out I don't even have room to get the hard ceramic boot over the top of the shorty Accel plugs on #5 & #6. The Thermotech sleeve 14300 looks like it might be slimmer.

Should Hooker headers #2451-1HKR fit a straight plug head. Some say yes some say no. What do you think?

I hate this for you BUT I bet 80 out of 100 sets of headers have this problem,try the gasket that has a thick foil like wrap over a standard type Gasket they are thicker and then you will probably have to Ding the pipe with a ball peen Hammer  mark the spot before you remove the header then hit the Ball peen with another Hammer while its on the floor. this sux but thats what you get.

I often wondered if header manufacturers ever try thier product with spark plugs installed. Only headers I built myself had good plug clearence.
Most of the others I had to put a dent in them, on some plugs, with a steel tube to clear the plug wires. The big 2 1/4" headers on the Beretta were a pain in some spots.

Well I'm back. Changed out headers and have good clearance on all but #6. On the new set of headers the spark plug wire boot is so close to the header pipe the fiberglass sock I have over the boots touches it. It appears 1200 degrees doesn't offer enough protection because the sock has a neat burn hole through it and the boot underneath burned through exposing the socket end. All in one cruise.

Back when I first posted this issue I was advised to try the Taylor metal boot 2570. Since the sock touched the header the metal cap has got to be at least the same. I'm trying everything I can to keep from making a dent on my headers. How much clearance is enough around a boot to keep them from burning?

I have a 1969 327 engine that is bored .40 over and I keep fowling 2 opposing plugs.

Could anyone recommend a good hot plug to use in this engine?

are the headers ceramic coated? if not, coat them to reduce the heat radiation affecting the plug boots.

what do you mean by two opposing plugs? do you mean you have two cylinders next to each other that keep fouling the plugs? you might have a blown head gasket.

Good question dond, or is it 2 opposite cylinders such as #5 and #7.,. this could indicate a ruptured modulator diaphragm causing tranny fluid to get drawn into the intake under high vacuum conditions.,. this will cause plugs to foul.
Please be specific and clarify the issue, so we can better recommend solutions.
