I have a 70 El Camino with a 350 and TH350, I want to replace them with a 454 and TH400. Is it a straight forward swap? For example are the engine and trans mounts the same. I live in Australia and getting information on cars imported from the US can sometimes be difficult. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

the 70 el camino  came with a big block and th400 so it will fit without serious modifications.

You will need the big block engine stands because they lower the engine in the car for hood clearance, the heater box will have to be changed to the big block unit for  valve cover clearance.   You will probably have to either keep a points dizzy or convert it to electronic ignition.  the large hei cap can hit the firewall.

the cross member will have to be shifted towards the rear, the bolt holes should be there other wise you may need to drill new ones.   the drive shaft will have to be shortened because the th400 is longer than a th350.  You have to find a drive line shop so it can be balanced.

This is one of the easier swaps you can do as this car came with the BB from the factory. Build it right and you can easily have a mid 12 second road warrior. If you have the bucks a 10 second car is not out of the question as 650-700hp is not uncommon out of a BB 454-468.
A nice set of headers for your car will make the swap easier and give you some more HP.
Is Australia still as nice as it used to be. I have heard from some who have come to the going downhill United States, that it is not.
