I'm putting a 366 motor into a 72 Nova. What size transmission should I use to stand up to the big block? Is a 366 a good drag motor?

Thanks for your suggestions.

are you sure its a 366  big block....

how about some casting numbers off the heads and block...

i seem to recall that the 366 and 427HD motors came with 4 ring pistons...

does the intake have the ever so cool double thermostat housing????

did it come with the holley carb with the governor on it.???

as for transmissions....  powerglide... th350, th400, modified TH200r4 modified 700r4

what are you plans for the car... daily driver...   street strip...  strip only...

lets find out what you have...   the 366s were designed to power big trucks pulling heavy loads all day long..  but not to really rev like you want in drag racing....

Actually the 366 is a good foundation engine just as the 427 is. Yes the pistons came with 4 rings and also heavy duty rods. The crank is forged steel and the block has 4 bolt mains on all 5 caps.
Only problem is,,, it's a tall deck block and even though all Mark IV heads fit on the engine,,, intakes will need spacer plates with a gasket on top and bottom.
The distributor also needs a longer shaft. Aftermarket distributors are available with an adjustable collar that allows setting the drive gear to it's proper depth. For oil pump drive and cam gear mesh.
The 366 will rev as much as any 396 Big Block,,, but for the small displacement, it's really not worth the effort.
BUT,,, the forged crank will fit in a 454 and wil make a 427, with 427 pistons. The Allison transmission was also behind some of these truck engines.
The Holley with governor was a 600 CFM and I worked on a few.

Hi there,
If you have not got the original inlet manifold
and are not aware that the block and head spacings
are 1/8" wider than the other big blocks and the
inlet gaskets need to be much thicker to compensate
for the difference. In Standard form the 366 was fully
intended to be a workhorse and I would keep it that way.
 Good luck..Skyeking

That reminds me I had a 366 truck engine and scraped it not knowing the darn thing had a forged crank!! That was years ago though.

The engine will be under square which is more intended for torque and pulling situations.  I think it would work ok in your nova.  I dont know about the piston selection cause the ones you have will be low compression units and have the 4 rings (I always wonderd why they did that?) I doubt the intake is good for anything past 4000 rpms.  You would be better off getting a 396 or 454 block if possible.

The crank and rods are good items and would work great in a 396 or 427 build.
The 3.75" crank in a 454 block makes a 427.
