Hi Everyone, i have a dirt track car that i want to put a 283 SBC motor into. Its not the biggest i know but its all i got for now. Ive asked questions about how i should cut the camshaft for best racing performance, but most people simply tell me to get a bigger motor, i get an impression that they not so sure themselves. This isnt a common motor to see on any race track, its possible most people simply dont know.

I havent really worked with this much, i believe that you can take a stock 327 or 350 cam and use that for racing? Is that the best cam to use to race with on this engine type?

Thanx.

The motor is stock right now, it will be used as race engine only. Ive never built a V8 before and never raced a car either. I wanted to throw on a set of 350 stock heads, not sure how to choose a carb size. Budget limits me to get too involved with increasing piston size, stroke and so on. But this is more a work in progress, slowly but surely ill better the whole car. What do you think abount these engines? Thanx for responding.

They are great little engines putting 350 on can kill the power out put depending on chamber size.

Ok been looking at parts and it is going to cost you quite a bit to build that 283 and make a performer out of it what is your budget.
The heads cost the most

What does the car weigh and what transmission are you going to use?

Laugh  Hi there,
An olde formula and a good one was to use 492 heads with 1.94 ins
2" wont help at all for the bore even if it is 40/1000" over.
For a real all rounder the cam  I would use is the 222*/222*//447"/447"
  A 327 cam...Carby would be 600 Holley with smart Vacuum 2ndrys.
A 600 DP is good BUT needs to be set up REALLY well as not to bog
the motor down which is a dead loss..  Go well and safe,,Skyeking Cool

Are you using the stock flattop pistons? If so the 327/350 heads would lower your compression unless your getting them cut to lower chamber volume.
Are you gonna run race fuel?
How long is the track? the straightaways? Whats the banking if any? Is this a 2bbl class? Whats the weight of the car[driver included]? Whats the gearing?
We will need info to help you get the most for your money

Hi there,
I believe that with the iron heads 10.5 comp is all they
can handle for best results with pump gas  skyeking

thats a good rule of thumb skye but I like to figure mine off dynamic instead of static compression. If he's stuck running in a 2bbl class then everything changes
