Hello guys, I recently bought a brand new pair of 882 heads (still in packaging) real cheap as in I saved 800 bucks from new aluminum heads, I am building a engine up and need some advice on engine parts. I was looking at those new holley carbs that just came out as my carb, a edelbrock rmp air gap intake, I have pro magnum comp full 1.5 3/8 roller rockers, Gen I stock 4 bolt main block with guts still in it, a possible 4 speed manual trans or auto ( havent decided) , and timing gears with headers.
Main question is what type, and size of cam should I get and do I need aftermarket springs for my heads and size of stall convertor for the trans. What can I get with out getting messing with the springs on the heads.  Kinda want a cam with lump sound to it. Any ideas or what i should be doing?  Thanks

You should always use the proper springs for the cam and if you are looking for some power out of your engine then you need better heads those 882's are one of the worst heads GM ever produced.

That's one thing about me tuff I'm honest.
Those heads were cheap for a good reason.

+1 pman, I would sell those new 882 heads to someone else and buy another set of heads. Any cam that is big enough for sound will be too big for those heads and performance will be poor

Heads are where ALL the power is created
The combustion chamber is the "furnace" where kinetic energy gets converted to rotating energy,,,,,, crap heads crap power
it's as simple as that...<--- period Smile

agreed pman. Good thing about 305 heads is that I get them for free because nobody around here wants them. lol

+1 most get rid of them because they don't know how to port them properly so they will be good heads.

porting is best left to experience and besides, most guys would not have the patience to sit for countless hours and hog out a set of iron heads,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, if it would take more than 10 minutes, they would lose interest.
Most guys I have run across in my time,,, want to "slap" an engine together in an afternoon
and then expect to break records, lol

same here tuff. I get grief for spending a day or longer putting an engine together but mine last. I've finished porting heads for people who thought it was something they wanted to do but they tend to get mad when you tell them what they messed up
