I have a 1976 chevy pickup with HEI ignition and it start fine at the start, but once ran for about 30 minutes it is really hard to start, it isn't hot enough that it would be vapor lock, I wonder if it is ignition related, the timing is correct.

It could be the ignition module is going bad, when it heat soaks it starts malfunctioning.

Another possible culprit, the fuel filter might need changing.

i had a similiar problem, though mine was solved with a non aluminum 1 inch carb spacer, i guess my fuel was evaporating once hot.

I remember that post jcr3ws. Glad that solved your problem, could be mountainkid's problem too. Is it after you shut it off and then try to restart after a few minutes that it cranks for a while before it fires? If so, you are probably boiling the gas in the carb and need a phenolic spacer.  JW.

is it slow to crank hot.  if so it could be a low torque starter... 3508 instead of a 3510..  high torque starters have 2 tabs that stick up out of the motor case...

have you also checked that the rotor is free to advance and return fully to its stop???     they do hang up...

i have had to avoid some brands of gasoline... as i have had boiling fuel in the carb problem also...

Just buy a phenolic(wood) spacer...Helps stop the heat transfer...

Or get a small Cater Thermo Quad carb with phenolic (plastic) body,,, like one of these.
