I am looking for a set of old heads for my 454.
I've heard of "peanut heads" but am unsure how to identify them or if they are good to use for a cruiser.
Can anyone tell me how to identify a peanut head vs others? Is there a casting number range or can I tell visually?

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

You can identify them by looking at the intake manifold flange (namely the entry of the ports) or the casting number will also usually verify this.

The "peanut ports" are round and very small, the oval ports are (this is astounding) oval-shaped! They are taller than wide and significantly larger than a peanut port. Most peanut ports are similar in flow to a good small block Chevy head and probably measured approximately 190-200cc in terms of volume.

Even stock oval port heads with small valves can flow very well (up to 250-260 CFM). The port volume should be around 250-260cc as well.

If you don't care about power above 4000 rpm you can use a peanut port.

Casting Number: 3999241

Would you consider this a peanut head?
Thanks

No! I have those heads and they are a good large oval port head.  I have a big block chevy book and it calls those heads out buy casting number 241 as an excellent set of street performance heads.  so the book says.

"How to build max performance chevy rat motors" is the name of the book, its got head and block casting numbers and its a pretty good all-around book.
