Was putting new exhaust on today and saw where my rear end is slobbering everywhere.
I bought a complete kit with all new everything, less ring and pinion about a year ago.Actually I also bought everything for the whole rear suspension, and trailing arms, but been avoiding tearing it down cause I have no info on rebuilding a Dana 44 unit that came in the 80-82 Corvettes.
It can no longer be avoided.
I need the factory specs from GM so I can get this thing back together proper like.Pre loads, lash, pinion depth, torque specs,ect..I could measure what it is now and set it back up as it was,but it's been a howler since I've owned the car and it will need to be "adjusted". Just hate tearing into it without some guidelines.I've done rearends before a never had problems, but I ain't done enough to go winging it freestyle.

I have this from corvette fever. It's not much help.

No  The danas came in 80.My 79 body is sitting on an 80 to 82 frame apparently. My car should be having an Eaton cast iron unit with 3.55's,but it don't.It has an aluminum "Batwing",Dana44 with 3.08's.I didn't notice before I bought it,cause I didn't know much about vettes at the time.Motor and trans #'s are matching the last 4 in the VIN.I haven't been able to get up and look at the frame #'s.I'm pretty sure it's an original 80 up frame and not a modified 79 cause there are no signs of anyone having been cutting and welding on it.

I could easily buy a book I guess, but just don't want to spend the money for something I will probably only use once.

Got some pre-load specs.
http://www.differentials.com/technical-help/set-up-specs

I just hope the straight axle Dana specs will work for the Corvette.
It's pretty frustrating to see all kinds of info for all kinds of rear ends on the net,but nothing for one in an 80 Corvette.Haynes and Chiltons don't cover the diff's?

The pinion depth I can get from the shim packs that are in it I guess, but still need info on the carrier bearing pre-loads ..if they use any.
