Hello all... I have an 86 Camaro with a small block 350 it has double hump heads headman headers Holley carb msd box with accel distributor. I needed to change the plugs because I wasn't sure when they were changed last and I had 1 spark plug wire that had a hole in it that was arching off the header and found 1 tip of a plug broken off but the car ran fine. I took autolite plugs out of it and now it runs rough it the problem the new accel plugs? Please help
Did you check gap of plugs.Wires pushed in an snapped down.Any chance a wire terminal came off inside a boot.Crack a spark plugFiring order correct.#5+#7 wires separated my more than one inch to prevent crossfiring.Cap not centered on dist housing. All parts installed in hei
Well we used the sf mad crimping tool so I know its right. We set the gap at 0.45 the cap on the dist was loose before but we centered it up with the push down locks.not understanding all parts installed hei?
I will check the wires to make sure that they are separated but if their not then that will cause a problem?
the cap on the dist was loose before but we centered it up with the push down locks.not understanding all parts installed hei? that's just a oops... i should have said.. distributor.. take the cap back off if it was OFF CENTER...check up inside it for signs of damage where the tip of the rotor whacked the terminals inside the cap...triple check everything.. something is wrongdid you use a small amount of dielectric tune up grease wiped inside the boots.. but not on the terminal.. this stops any HIGH Voltage leaks between the ribs on the spark plug insulator and the inside of the spark plug boot.. yep.. it really does work as long as you get it in the proper area...you can also put some on the inside of the boots on the coil terminals.. depending on which distributor you have.. i see that you have an access.. but they have several version...please make sure that the large black wire to the remote HEI box is actually grounded to the ENGINE block or HEADS... it has the spark return path..do you really want it going up the negative battery cable and then way back to the MSD box to make a complete circle..you could have mechanical damage to the tip of the rotor...you could have mechanical damage to the terminals in the cap..you could have electrical burn damage to the cap...
Keith Whenever you do a tune up NO MATTER how far yougo with it, always change one part at a time. Thenyou will know if you have a problem related to that last part you replaced. When it comes to SBC Headers and burning a plug wire, it's not uncommon. You can purchase the bestplug wires and they still may burn through. The bestprotection is to get the header wrap and wrap the bootsall the way passed the header. It cost a little moreat first, but having to put wires on it every couple months takes care of that problem....Good LuckBob
