If any of you guys know where the vin # is stamped on the body of my '63 Nova, I'd appreciate it very much if you could share the info with me.  I've had the title to it stolen, and need to find the vin to get a new one.
Thanks in advance.

a duplicate of the vin number is stamped on the ID plate under the hood on the firewall..
and on the proper plate either on the dash board or on the inside of the A pillar next to the windshield...

there are usually other  several places that GM stamped the Vin number..

this is a funny question...  as it sounds like you have the car that the Vin numbers were removed from...

if the VIN number was removed and you OWN the car...    take the car to your local DMV or State Highway patrol office on a TRAILER...  for a VIN verification and if the proper VIN number was removed... they will issue a NEW LEGAL vin number..  and affix it to the body ..

if your car is partially completed..  you can ask them to verify that its not stolen..  they might be good enough to do that..  they will probably still want to issue you a vin ..  and install it.

DO NOT TAMPER WITH THIS VIN..   Vin tampering is a federal offense..   there are several groups of car guys sitting in prison right now because of vin tampering.

Thanks for the info.  This car is definately mine, have owned it for years, but its been heavily modified, dash removed, firewall covered up, ect.  It has been a dedicated drag car for years.  I had the title, but never put it in my name, (mistake by the way, if you ever get a car, put it in your name if you  plan on keeping it for more than 24 hrs).  I want to either sell it or put it back on the road and need to title it either way.

thats a great point

what most people don't know is that in almost any STATE..

you can request TITLE ONLY...  this makes the car yours... puts it in your name..

REGISTRATION is what you need to OPERATE the vehicle on the public streets or even TOW it on the streets with any wheels in contact with the ground..

i have a 62 nova factory service manual.. both sections.. i will dig into it.. but i don't think they put the VIN locations in there..  those are usually HELD by the law enforcement and DMV and they usually don't share that info...

at this point.. trailer it as a COMPLETE car.... after making an appointment for a VIN CHECK ..  they will handle it from there..

do download you states Vehicle code sections you need...

read them thru..     they usually come in as acrobat files...    highlight the sections you need or PRINT them...  so you don't run into a person who is going to give you the OKIEDOKE..

its all in the PRINT...  and if they tell you something different than whats in the PRINT.. ask for a supervisor for clarification..

DMV does not make the rules.. the state elected reps make the rules..
