I have a 350 from a 88 gmc vandura and one from a 1990 silverado.  I was wondering if i would be able to get a pre 86 rebuild kit, if i plan on switching over to carbs.  Also most likely be getting new heads, or would i have to get the specific gaskets.  I assume ill be buyin a new rear main seal but, just would like to know if the rest of them would work out the same.

there are differences starting at 86..  where the heads changed to center bolt versions...  but early heads will bolt right on..

but the bigger difference is in the cranks....   both of your engines will have the ONE PIECE rear main seal cranks...

and there is nothing wrong with that design..   there are just slight variations in parts..  and yes... if you want a steel crank over a cast iron version..  they did come stock in truck motor versions..   usually in manual transmission engines..

do you have a reason to want to order earlier parts???    there are ways to mix and match parts..  more ways than you could ever imagine..

i was just looking at the different rebuild kits and am new to small blocks, so as long as i get the right main seal i should be good to order basicly any of the rebuild kits if i plan on puttin the older style heads on?

In ordering a timing chain use the Cloyes 9-3100. The crank gear  has three keys for advance and retard. It's a true roller set-up and HAS NO retard in the gears. The cams usually have some retard built into them also,so go with anything other a stock rebuild cam and you will be OK......
Thank's
