I have a 66 nova SS. I put a 383 stroked, comp cam 299, holley 950, victor JR, 250 shot of NOS with a progressive controller, seperate fuel cell / pump, line lock, TCI front end coil over, mustang rack, TCI 4 link, ford 9" Detroit locker, 411 gears and 10.5" tires in the rear.
It should have 485hp on the motor and another  250hp on NOS.
I have 2 questions.
I have a 10 point cage that I wondering if I should install. The car is a street rod with occasional track time.
The frame is connected and I'm wondering without the cage if it will twist.

I'm also wondering how fast will it be.

It was my fathers car in bought it in 67 and used it as a race only car, tow bared it to the track. I got it when he passed away and have been building it for the last 4 years. I have not started yet but will very soon. The wiring is going in for the NOS then plumbing and I can fire it up.
Let me know what you think. I'm trying to build it so I can pull the front wheels off the ground.

I can't give you any honest answers. You probably have a 10+ second race car and no roll cage?I would put a cage in it before you pop the windows out of it!!!

I had a 1966 ChevyII with a 355 Big Roller on a 850 Holley. Home brewed Heads. 5:67 Ford rear with a spool and 14" wrinkle walls, A full cage and then I upgraded it to a Funny car cage. I was thrown off the track I had gone to for years. I went too fast.I went 9:40s. It didn't feel any different to me.

Thanks. Do you think a 10+ sec car with no trans brake could pull the wheels off the ground running 10.5  drag radials.
Iv got and had a couple vettes that I had at the track but only a couple times playin around.

.. Most any car can pull the front wheels off the ground... we try and build to keep the front wheels on or near the ground so it will get down the track quick...

Your asking if it will pull the wheels without a Brake. Yap any race car that has that potential you better put wheelie bars on. I had to put bars on my ChevyII it scraped the rear bumper a couple times. I never ran juice, squeeze or any power adders.I like raw horse power. You break enough parts as it is why force them to break????

My ChevyII weighed 3,000LBS. With me in it. Which was 4.5 weight to power/ratio.
I ran a 9:42@143MPH. The engine was Dynoed at 680 horse power,I jetted the engine up. It was still making HP. I pushed the timing to 40 degrees. It gained 28 horse power at 8250RPM gain to 708hp. The day that it went that fast I knew if was on a good pass so I rode it out.... I really don't rely on a dyno for any true horse power, because the track dictates what you really need to do. You can make too much horse power in the morning test, go back in the afternoon and not change a thing maybe valve lash, and the car runs slower?

I try telling younger guys you can have a $40,000 engine the poor guy next to you borrowed money for gas can beat you. It's knowing what to do with what you have,or how little you have..LOL... Learn to tune your engine even a couple degrees of timing on a nice cool damp late summer night you can blow the tires off your car.

OH YAH it doesn't happen over night. The other thing Keep Records. ....
MERRY CHRISTMAS

Thank you
I understand that's not the way to achieve low ET, but it was my fathers car and initially that's what I'm going for.
When I got it, it had a 56 olds rear end with 5 something gears. I want a couple memories / photo!s pulling the wheels off the ground
Before I dial it in and get it adjusted for time. I assume with a 4 link it shouldn't be that hard with enough power. I have never done it so I'm curious if it's possible with what I have. This will be a learning experience for me.

it was your father's car that he raced, he passed away, you decide to throw nitrous on it?
wouldnt it be better to preserve the car because it was your fathers? >.>

Yes exactly.
I had not seen him since I was 6. One of the things I remember is a old Nova race car he had in the driveway one of the last times I saw him. My sister found he had past away in the paper, we went to pay our respect's and met his wife. She was really nice, gave use a photo album and some of his personal items. She said he always wanted to contact us but he was scared we would reject him.
He only lived 3 miles from my office. I never knew. ( I know it like an Opra special). Anyway I asked if she had any photos of the race car. She said no but she had the car behind the garage and it was mine if I wanted it. Of course I did. It was just a shell, but it had a solid body and good glass.  So I had know idea what the car was other than a race car, so I'm making it into my idea of a race car.
I think it's cool that I'm working on and will be driving the same car he wrenched on and raced. I had to replace everything except the body panels , glass and steering wheel.

I'm saddened by that story, and its really a shame your Dad was so close to your work place. Well honor him and use it in the way it was intended. I know your  dad would be happy to see it run. BUT PUT A ROLL CAGE IN IT..... If I can ask you sound young. How old was your Dad?

I have been selling my race cars in fact I sold my ChevyII last Sept 2011. My 1968 Camaro sold the month before. I'm waiting for my Dad's car to come home. It's a 1964 Mercury Comet Caliente. He died in 1968 and the car never was really, run or flogged. It's all together,my uncle who was a partner. His health is starting to fail. It was on loan to car collectors, and now I hope I can devote my time to it before my time comes.....LOL......

I'll tell you my buddy has had Olds/Poncho rears in his race cars he tells me since he build his first street/strip race car. He had a collection of 12 ready to go pumpkins, and collected as many parts as he could. If you are going to run the Olds/Poncho rear start looking for gear and parts, they are going to get scarce. Did you ever help your Dad put one in. If anyone thinks the 9" Ford is heavy they should pick up one of those bad-boys.There similiar to Ford it's a third member.

What class did your Dad run with it? Have fun!...
Thanks
Bob

.. With a 5-something rear end just about any engine should be able to loft the hoops...

My dad was 66. I'm now 44.it really was a shame. I have no idea what class he ran. I and no contact with him or anyone who knew him until after he passed. I only saw the car once in the driveway. I never even saw it up close until it was given to me.
The olds rear end is already gone. He had put in a home made 4 link build from 2"x4" steel tubing. It weight a ton and was only 3" from the ground. I cut the whole thing out when the TCI 4 link and 9" went in. I have heard good things about the olds rear's.
I plan to start installing the cage this week. I bought a 10 pt cage from Summit ( competition engineering) 2 years ago.
I was putting off the install of the interior to see if I really needed the cage. I now see i do, I kind of knew it all a long.
Thanks you

Hi Gary

Good going on the 10 Point Cage. It will stiffen the suspension and stop it from flexing.
Do you have a Coupe or Hard Top? If I can give you one little piece of advice on the cage.
The bar that goes behind the drivers seat,Push it back far enough so you can put a good seat in it if your tall have leg room. When I updated my ChevyII to a Funny car cage it was modified so I could attach the seat belt to the cage and floor. When I was in that it
I was comfortable, if you had to sit in it ie. oil down or whatever. Your as old as my daughter.
HAPPY NEW YEAR

Iv got the cage in and all welded up now, except the cross bar that's across the doors. I have them cut and notched but I'm going to weld those next week end. I also have the horizontal bar behind the seats for the 5 point harness to mount. I have a set of racing seats from summit with mounts and covers. I put the hoop just. Back of the door latch so I should have plenty of room.
I wanted to also put a cross bar running from the horizontal hoop bar on an angle from below that bar running to the floor, but I don't know if I should have the bar meet the floor on the passenger side or drivers side. Maybe it dosnt even matter.
I plan on using this as an occasional street rod with limited track use.  I still have the original front and back seats. I just put them up on the shelf. The car only has 28k original miles so the seats are in great shape. I figure I'll just save them. You never know what the future will bring.  I then have to install the plumbing for the water, the belt and run the wires for the NOS and I will be starting it.
Should be the end of the month.  It's finally coming together, iv been working on it for about 5 years off and on.

Thanks for your thoughts.
