i built a 305 this last year and got it in a 82 c10 truck with a th350. i had problems with it running rough at first but i had a put used edlbrock 650 on it and one of the air bleeds was pluged. after i rebuild the carb the truck ran like a bat outa hell. but one day while having some fun it started missing. and now it will run well from a cold start but after it runs for about 3min it starts missing and trying to die at idle. and misses at all rpms. i checked my oil and it was black with very small black chunks in it, and my spark plugs have a light coat of oil on them.
apperently the highschooler i paid to change the oil while i was gone for the weekend lied to me and never did change it. so with all the break in material in the oil how much damage am i looking at? would it be possible oil passage blockage not allowing the lifters to pump up? or am i looking at replacing the rings or more?

if you wouldn't let someone else service your wife why would you let someone else service your vehicle?
- i did love my chevette (first car) more than my first wife my 94 4.3L Astrobrick would outrun the 99 5.4L f350 i had to drive for work

any ideas on how much damage im looking at? again im still learning myself here. this is my first engine project outa school.

You could be looking at any thing from a rebuild to a bent push rods.

i may have come off a little harsh... i understand that everyone has to start somewhere AND i think it's great that you are willing to help someone get their hands dirty but SUPERVISION would have eliminated this...the old oil would'nt have killed the motor to stay in for a few more days or miles
anyway, good luck with the motor...chunks of anything can't be good let us know what you find

it's all good. well i started it up again today to move it and now it has a tic from the pass side head. but i just rented out a shop and im in the moving process so i dnt have the time to pull the valve covers. and it almost acts like its running too rich again. but it didnt miss last time. i will pull the valve covers and intake and see what i find.

Sounds like you may have a stuck lifter. When you get the chance, pull the valve covers, and turn the engine over by hand, watch all the rockers, and see if any aren't opening like they should. If it's a flat tappet cam, you could have a wiped out lifter.

this weekend i pulled the valve covers and turned it over and they all operated correctly. and they were all still at the rite preload. the pushrods looked ok even though i did not pull the intake. i checked with a flashlight down the bores and spun the pushrods. then i put it back togeather and started it up again and checked my exhaust to see what side was missing and its the driver side bank that is missing. so i pulled the plugs and all of them had oil down at the sparkplug seat, but looked like the tips were burning corectly. the #1 cyl had the most oil. and there is alot of blowby comming from the valve covers too.
would i be close in thinking that because the carb was running really rich before i rebuilt it the carb. that it washed out the rings and they were not able to seat correctly. causing the rings to fry? thats the only reason i can think of how that much oil got on the plugs. but im guessing im going to have to pull the engine apart and check every part. so my plan is to do that and get some total seal rings and rebuild kit and maybe a new cam and torque converter. 3500 stall? and i want to bring down the high end hp and give it more low end power but i dont want to have to totaly fab the exhaust sys again. so i thought maybe i could just put a 3" to 2 1/2" reducer and then back to three. anybody think that would help out the low end if i put them 15" from the header?
