My 383 stroker runs hot I put a Tuff Stuff high flow water pump and a 180 high velosity thermostat. Is there a way to check if my fan cluch is bad while it's on the car... Thanks

befor you start the car and the engine is cool, the fan should spin with some good resistance.
there are also some mods you might need to do. first you need to take the pump off and block the bypass. don't worry its getting relocated. while the pump is off tap into both sides of the pump and run -6an lines from the two outlet legs to the heads just under the center 2 exhast ports. this will cool the iner 2 cambers and keep them from create vapor pocets, no vapor pocets means better flow. now relocating the bypass, just run 1 -6an line from the intake just below the t-stat to the rad. do this and use good coolant to water ratio and she'll cool down. thats the cheaper way. the other way is to shell out the money for the duel highflow electric fan.

What kind of car is this 383 in? You shouldn't have to do those kind of heavy cooling system mods to kep the engine cool.
When you say run hot, at what temp does the gauge read when the engine is "running hot"? Yes, first off check the fan clutch and see if it's bad. If the fan spinns freely with no resistence, it's bad.
Is the fan shrouded? This can affect cooling performance negatively if the fan has no shroud.
Your high flow water pump could bee too high flow. It might be pulling water form the radiator too fast, so the water doesn't have enough time to exchange heat in the radiator.
One other thing, are you sure your gauge is reading properly?

The fan clutch seems ok, no looseness and has resistance and dose'nt keep spinning when I turn off the engine. I thought about an electric fan. If I have to modify it oh well it gives me something to *** Thanks

I have it in a 1980 corvette the gauge worked fine with the stock 350 but I'll check it with a laser temp gauge. I put a 45 degree swivel water neck with a chrome rad. hose which sits with a high bend at the neck I was wondering if it's creating a water bubble thats effecting the water flow. It's running at about 210 degrees. I do have a fan shroud on there and the fan clutch seems good... Thanks

What kind of car is this engine in? Before installing an electric fan or performing any other modifications, give us some more info on the car.
Aluminum or iron heads?

210 in not hot. put in a 195 t-stat to see if it drops any more. maybe even put an extra electric fan on the front of the rad to push more airflow through.
Now What I said previously about the mod was because in the very fist statment the motor was a 383 not a 350. the 383 acts and has the same caractoristics as a 400. now of the 400's there were steem holes unlike the 350. now alot of 383's do not need this mod but the ones that do need the vapor relifes however they get there.

Defintiely check with a laser gun to see the actual temp. What thermostat are you running? Going to a lower temp one could bring the temp down to a more comfortable level. One other thing, how old is your radiator cap? If the spring in the cap is worn out, the system won't be able to pressurize properly and cooling performance will be hurt.

That was 210 and climbing while sitting in traffic don't know how hot it would go if I did'nt finally get some clean air.

I'm running a Milodon 180 and a Tuff-Stuff high volume water pump the rad. cap is new. Could my exhaust be too small 1 3/4 pipes I ordered some hooker super comp headers and 2 1/2 inch 409 SS pipe

It's not the exhaust.
Have you tried "burping" the cooling system to make sure you don't have an air bubble trapped somewhere? THat can cause some of the problems you're experiencing.
What kind of coolant/water mixture are you using?

When i turned off the car it sounded like a water cooler bubbling first time I noticed it, How do I burp the system, I'm using SheelZone concentrate. I planned on the exhaust system anyway for more horsepower... Thanks

with the engine cold, remove the radiator cap make sure the coolant level is about 2 inches from the spout then start the car as it warms up watch the coolant flow when the t-stat opens the level will drop. if there is any air in the system the level will be lower than when you started let this cycle a couple of times and when the engine is hot top it off with coolant and reinstall the cap.

Well I burped the system and I think that did the trick it seems to run alot cooler. It took me 5 years to restore this vette. I'm not really that knowledgeable when it comes to engines as you can tell and thanks to everyone for all your help and info. I'm sure I'll be back here with something else to ask about. Many thanks
