yes dual exhaust will make a difference even on a stock engine. Thats why there is a ton of after market kits that are "tuned" for specific vehicles. You just want to use the right setup, throwing 1 3/4 headers and 3 inch exhaust on a stock small block is gonna kill the low end torque and scavenge.  A mild small block will perform well with 1 5/8 headers and 2 1/4 pipes with any popular after market muffler. You want to spend your dollars right the first time on the exhaust just as well the engine you build.

well i have a 79 silverado with a 305 in it. so would an aftermarket dual exhause be better than an aftermarket single? cause i was thinking about getting a super 40 series flowmaster but its only single

yes, anytime you can make the engine breath better the more efficant the engine becomes. hence more power.

Definetly a difference! I went from a single stock exhaust to dual super 40 flowmasters on my 89 caprice and there is a major difference... Not just the sound! I am also running a 305... Well I was, swapping to ZZ crate this weekend! :O)

to make it a dual exhaust i need to just buy 2 of the super 40s right. one for each pipe?

yes that is correct. Usually best to keep the pipes straight as possible if you use a muffler shop. Use 2 1/4 inch pipe too, Oversize pipe will kill the low end torque.

I did a search @ Summit Racing and found a kit for your truck. Dynomax sells a 2.25" complete kit for your truck (minus mufflers) for $143. The kit will work with headers or manifolds. I was assuming you didn't have headers. Headers of course will help your engine to breathe as well. Here is the Link: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/WLK-89006/ *NOTE* I dont know where you live and what your smog laws are but this kit is "not for pollution controlled vehicles." If you don't have any smog requirments you will be fine.

oh and im planning on getting some headers also. basically ripping out the entire exhaust system and starting new with performance stuff

yea u could get a few cats and have a muffler shop splice them into any exhaust. im running a 383 stroker motor that is greatly modified with dual 3 inch exhaust with super 44's amazing sound and power!
