i just got my hands on my first project, a nova, after doing the rear brakes, lines were leaking, i discovered the heater core was leaking, replaced it, then noticed my temp guage, while at idle, creeped up to 230. I dont think its because of the heater core. I changed out the thermostat with a 180 degree one from oreilly's. the radiator has a small leak, when on the road temp goes down to 200 or lower. car has died while at idle a few times and after long rides, 30 mins or more, it has hard time starting. what should be my next step? should i replace radiator?

basic diagnostics first... compression test... check/reset timing... check idle air screw adjustment... check/reset idle speed... check the condition of the distributor cap, rotor button, points (if original style dist.), plug wires, and plugs...does the fuel filter need to be replaced?...have seen thefuel tanks rust from inside out leaving the filter to catch and clog from chunks of rust...causes running problems at all speeds... check the condition of the radiator, is it corroded and gummed up...if it is you should probably replace it or at least have a radiator shop clean it up...since it is leaking anyway, take it to a shop and ask their opinion of it...sometimes itis just as expensive to clean or recore one as it is to replace it outright...
when it has a hard time starting, does the motor spin over slowor just as fast as when the motor is cold?
if it's slow, could be the starter getting hot and dragging...try using a shield...if that doesn't work replace the starter
if the motor spins fast enough but just won't start the tune-up checks should solve the problem
- i did love my chevette (first car) more than my first wife my 94 4.3L Astrobrick would outrun the 99 5.4L f350 i had to drive for work
