my transmission all of a sudden wont shift into third gear, i checked fluids and topped off two quarts, even after allowing trany to cool i am still having this problem so im fearing the worst. i was wondering what others experiences have been. ive read that it could be that the clutches for third and fourth could be worn out, it will shift into neutral and rev but no shift, first and second work fine. ive also read that it could be solonoid issues, but have read that solonoids dont controll the shift to third and fourth only first and second. i assume that reparing the clutches for third and fourth mean a rebuild. anyways im open to questions, suggestions, experiences etc. thanks guys.

if the clutches were worn out you would feel it sliping and it would most likly gradualy go out. a few thing to check would be, 1. drop the trans pan and find the 2-3 shift valve on the valve body, use an multimeter or ommeter to test the solinoid. or test them all if your not sure. 2. pull the valve body and check to make sure valves are not stuck. try not to damage the gaskets in any way. you can reuse them. check the mid plate for any damage, scarring, or warpadge. check the screens on the mid plate. check the 2-4 servo assembly for cut or bamaged seals. from here on you will need a trans book. 3. check the converter for internal damage. 4. check the governor aseembly. 5. check the pump. 6. check the case.
