rebuilding the same quadrajet thats on it.. is one option.. they worked really well for many years.. but after a while the gaskets get soft.. and need redoing...
if it is running bad... you might see when the last time you did a tune up... plugs , wires, cap and rotor... verifying the vacuum advance and mechanical advance works... making sure the vacuum operated valve in the right hand exhaust manifold works properly.. if it does not.. it blocks the exhaust and causes most of the exhaust to be forced across the intake and out the other side.. causing weird problems.. and burning the carb mounting gasket..
tips on calibrating carbs... it takes several books on each model to cover each carb... and installing an oxygen sensor in the exhaust and an air fuel ratio meter on the dash will really help in tuning ... imagine being able to tell if the mixture is rich or lean without pulling the spark plugs.. this is the year 2009...
knowing what you intend on doing with your truck also makes a small difference in which carb.... and if you care about fuel economy.. and seat bending power.. oh wait.. we are talking about a 305... sorry to get you all excited..
there have been other people who took off their later electronic quadrajets and feedback computer system. and then complained.. that they cannot get the 23 MPG with a holley and a vacuum advance HEI..
and if you have your stock quadra jet.. and it has been rebuilt and is not running right.. there is a hidden adjustment inside.. that is not to be adjusted.. but many people don't read the instructions first and move this screw .. you have to use needle nose pilers to do move it..
there are a lot of people who are happy with a new intake... and a 600 holley or an edelbrock carb..

If it is a edelbrock carb. you want then I would go with a 500CFM.

The 600Cfm is on the big side for a stock 305 chevy.

I would have the Q jet rebuilt and calibrated professionally. The small primaries help achieve the best economy especially on stock engines.
