im looking for some input or suggestions on what to do with the motor and trans. it has the original 305 in it still but not the original trans. i would like to keep the orig.305 and get it rebuilt and woked on, and change the tranny if i have to. looking for about 300 hp.. i know most of u guys/girls would prob say get a 350 but thats what im trying to figure out, whats the best and cheapest way to go about this... i wouldnt mind keeping it under $3500 total cost.. thanks

you can build a pretty good engine for $2000 but the trans id say prolly bout $1500 at least. but im telling you from what im going through now you better plan on twice that budget or cut the one you have in half, cause my 305 rebuild with a th350 that i build in school its cost me like $6500 so far. get a 350.
i decided to build a 305 for my truck to see how much hp i could get out of it. and im pretty sure im going to get way to cocky and try to ram it through a deep ass mud pit. and im prolly going to blow it to hell just so i can have a 350. i have talked to alot of people and like you said most have told me to go to a 350. and i gues it depends on what you are wanting to with it. i decided to go with the 305 anyway just so that when i do push it too hard and blow it i wont feel so bad cause its a 305. lol

if you cant build a 350 that makes 300 hp for under 3500, then forget chevys and get a ricer! even if you get a smogger out of a boneyard and clean it up, slide in a good cam , carb and manifold, and a set of headers, you can easily make 300+ hp, with cash left for tires to destroy. get a half sheet of plywood and put it on top of that 305 and use it for a workbench or a coffee table. theres no replacement for cubic inch displacement. a cool car like yours deserves a 350.

with some frugal shopping and a little horse-trading, you could build a 383 and stay within your budget...save some more money and have an aluminum headed 383
you'd have to be willing to part with the whole 3500 and some more eventually.... but if you only want 300hp, it's easy with the 305 and well within the budget... do some price shopping, finalize the plan and don't change it in the middle...that costs money
- i did love my chevette (first car) more than my first wife my 94 4.3L Astrobrick would outrun the 99 5.4L f350 i had to drive for work
