the shifter as i recall is not removable .... you drop the trans out after taking out the carpet.. pulling the huge floor pan that covers the transmission.. this allows you enough room to work and to slide the trans back.. and lower it out the bottom...
the motor comes out by its self.. ... this is not an application you can yank them together..
the factory put the motor and trans on the frame.. and lowered the body over.. then put in the bolt in floor pan and carpet..
as for what to put back in.. all depends on your level of skill.... a complete 305 or 350 TBI motor with trans and wiring harness and computer is probably the best swap... make sure the engine harness is not cut.. it comes out the firewall through a small hole after disconnecting the computer and a single plug... you only need a few wires hooked up to make it all run with the fuel injection... but you will also need the fuel lines and electric fuel pump... but... all the sensors .. including the oxygen sensors have to be installed for it to work properly..
a lot of people have swapped in 472/500 cad motors and TH400s out of rear wheel drive cads up to 76... but a good pair are really hard to find.. big block chevy headers can be used on them with an adaptor plate on either side..
i take it that you are going for a drivability and fuel economy improvement ...
best of luck.. ... usually one does not pull the engine and trans on something.. until he has a replacement to install..
