OK need a good place to start diagnosing this 01 Camaro I have owned about 4 months. Problem is that the security light stays on when the car is running. Starts OK 1st time every time. Tried the relearn procedure by bumping the key and leaving the ignition on for 10 minutes, security light never went out... Any sugestions??

that is probably going to need a scan tool to see whats happening.
i take it that your ignition key has the resistor pellet?????
usually when the security light comes on.. it prevents the engine from running..
there are a full set of diagnostic pages to find this problem.. but they are buried deep in factory service manuals..
how are the door hinges..???? are they sagging and the doors not closing all the way???? is the rear hatch staying open???
is the rear hatch pull down motor broken????
oops... edited... forgot year...

do not jump the A+B terminal. Its not like the old connectors were you can just turn the key and the codes flash on the dash. The computer system in the 01 camaro is an OBD II. By jumping it off can damage the computer.
Alot of time this problem comes from the locks. Both doors and the glass hatch all have lock sencors on them. Most likely one of thoughs are bad.
And if the security light is on and the can is still running and working properly, that means the system is off so you don't get injurd.

Doors don't sag yet, as for the rear hatch pull down, it may not be working, I did not think it had one. I will take a look this afternoon when the car gets back.. It does have the keys with the pellets in them. I am wondering if the previous owner had the security system partially bypassed, I seem to remember in my internet searches that 1 method leaves the security light on.

Also took it to the local parts store to see if it had any codes in it..None-- What is the best way to check the lock sensors? And if it was a lock sensor bad what other symtoms would it have. Locking by remote works, horn sounds breifly after locking, and red light on dash flashes. Little more history on the car - previous owners had AAA come put a battery in it several weeks before we bought the car, they had purchased another car previously and the Camaro sat without much use till I bought it.. They acted like they did not know when the security light started staying on.

arm the security system with you in the car. after the system fully arms then unlock and open the door one at a time. if you can the hach too. if one of three doesn't sound the alarm theres you problem. if not then its something else.
to really get more in deepth your going need a GM tech II scaner. dealership It might need to be recoded.
and about your key. does it have the black handle with the bowtie emblem or is it just an all metal key with know plastic.

OK set the alarm from in the car.... opening either door sets the alarm off. Hatch does not seen to have the auto pull down feature. I guess an independent garage can run diagnostics or does it need to be a dealer.

Ok that year modle never came with the auto pull down. that was for the third gen camaro. As far as the diagnostics you can try your local garage but I think that is a dealer only thing. Your standard scaner will not work is why.

a local shop will not have a tech II, only GM cert shops can purchase them to my knowledge, plus it costs a *** ton. the quickest easiest thing is just take it to a GM dealership. its worth the hour diag to know exactly what is wrong, and in most cases it will tell you what sensor or componant has an issue, if it throws a light, then there will be a code(at least in the history codes) . plus to correctly install any parts in the security system im pretty sure you have to have the scan tool to calibrate the system to the new part once its installed. but i could be wrong. it does sound like a sensor though.
like trans am said the tech II can pull codes that other scaners cant. GMs way to make sure you go to the dealership to have it done rite.
