Hi everyone I just picked up a 350 chevy I have been trying to look up which one it is and can't find my numbers. On the plate on passenger front side of block it reads 2312 356C ? On back side of engine on drivers side it reads GM 5.7LG below that it says SGI then to right on angle it says A168 thats it. It has passenger dipstick with a remote mount oil filter on passenger side too. It has aluminum Heads with this same number 2312 356C stamped into front side of them also. Inside heads there is one letter and three numbers that read W298 thats all the number on block or heads i have searched all over. Can anyone help?????????

There should be a casting number on the passenger side of the block.
From the info given it's a 350 and the date is jan. 16, 1988.

ok back of passenger side it reads 1X173202B. How do I go about finding something for the heads? W298 is all it says inside heads. Was told this was a GM test block for dyno pulls only doesn't look like it has been ran very much. Thanks for the help!

Nothing is coming up under that number.
FOR the heads under the valve covers there should be a casting number as well.
What is the casting number on the crank shaft.

A168 means it was cast on, Jan. 16,1988

I'm not coming up with anything else. except that it might been a prototype competion motor.

try to find any numbers on the crank, idenify if its forged or cast. forged will have a wide line down the middle that looks like someone put a grinder to it. cast will have a thin line running down the middle.

If the heads are off look inside the intake ports and under the intake ports for a part number or a casting number.

I talk to a buddy of mine that worked for GM in detroit. He says that your block and heads came from the GM tech department and they are posibly bowtie prototype block and heads.

Ok the block is an LT1. The front of the motor is a dead giveaway. Probably from the GM tech center being that the cast date was in 1988. The LT1 didn't make the seen till 92 and that was in the vette. The LT5 was in the 90 ZR1 vette. And the LT4 was in the 96 ZR1 vette and was all aluminum motor.

The heads are bowtie heads, the best GM makes. They don't come on any production motor. And being the stamp number does not match up either, they are probably from the GM tech center as well.

My buddy did say alot of the tech center motors just vanished.
My opinion you got a jem of a motor. Don't get rid of it.

yes I jumped all over it. It was on craigslist when I seen aluminum heads and at only $300 for everything pictured couldn't pass it up. guess he bought it for a $1000 from gm guy in 97 guy didn't tell him anything but it was a 350 and was used in dyno pulls only straight from gm plant out the back door in trunk of his car and has been setting in his garage ever since
