I am disappointed in the new Camaro and GM. I can see why they are bankrupt. For years GM has been paying out the wazoo for exorbitant salaries for UAW employees. A study by Congress showed that the average hourly wage including benefits in this country is about $28.00 per hour, yet for UAW workers (American car companies) it is about $75.00 and UAW (foreign cars) it is about $48.00. WOW! These figures should be close but I couldn't find the previous document so they could be off a little. Apparently GM managers didn't have a pair (and why did they make so much too??) And now the UAW has strangled the golden goose until it is almost dead. It will be soon. Nope! Let the American taxpayer bail them out. It seems the government has endless money so not to worry. But I am worried, I don't think the government has that much money to spend either. I heard one UAW worker on TV say that if he lost his job he would have to sell his summer home. Must be rough.
Onto the Camaro, I saw one at a dealer and was impressed by its looks. It really does look good but not at a price of $42,780. Yes it was loaded but $42,780!!!!! I compared a comparable Mustang and it came out to $38,120. Not a lot less but still 11% less and they didn't need a government bailout. AND if you look at the sticker on the Camaro, the engine is made in the US, the transmission in Mexico, and the rest in Canada. Now that is supporting the American worker even if they are overpaid. An American icon made in Canada. Unbelievable!!!!
And yes I do like Chevys. I own 6, all 1973 or older except for my 95 Lumina. I am really SAD. Finally, GM makes the brillant???? decision to get rid of Pontiac, Saturn, Hummer, and Saab. Hummer and Saab should be dumped but Pontiac and Saturn. Both innovative car companies. Why are they keeping Buick and GMC. A friend of mine, YES a Pontiac guy, said GM sold more Pontiacs last year than Buick. I don't know if that is true but I believe it is. Pontiac has always been the "experimental" company for GM and if you don't try new things you are dead. Bye Bye GM. GMCs are nothing but Chevys with different trim. People who want a Buick will buy a Chevy or Cadillac. Reduce the number of car lines but do it SMART. Ford gets by with three and Chrysler is down to two so GM, KEEP Chevy, Cadillac, Pontiac, and Saturn and dump the rest. Reduce your labor contracts to something reasonable so you can again invest in engineering and make GM once again the General that it once was.
