is anyone using new generation heads on old gen blocks? i don't know if you can or not but have heard good things about the new heads. I am interested in building a big inch small block and heard some new heads can make 400 to 500 ft lb of torque stock and are cheap. any help you can give is appreciated

Yes, the 96-98 Vortec heads used on the truck motors are great performers, and will bolt on to a Gen I block with no problem. The only issue is the Vortec heads use eight intake bolts instead of 12 like earlier Gen I heads, and they're at a different angle. So, you have to get an itake with a Vortec bolt pattern.

I think you were talking about the new LS vortec heads. if thats the case then no you can't. Unless you go to world products and get the motown II block, then you can have the best of both worlds. The LS anything on the topend and the old school on the bottom end. Its a BAD A$$ combo.
Now the heads on the 96-98 vortec are still a first gen. heads and 55Guy is right about thoughs.
