I am switching over from HEI to a points distributor when I put every thing together I still have no spark and the coil gets to hot to touch I ran a 12V wire from the battery for the time being am I putting to much power to the coil I dont know what I am doing wrong

First off the hei distributor is a lot better.
second a hei has 12 volts to the distributor and the points distributor requires lessor you will burn it up if I remember right.

Not a 100% sure but I know they had a resistor and or resistant wire on the points style all the I have done was converting from points to hei which is alot better not hei to points.

put the HEI back in the car. Its probly just the module inside the HEI. you can get that at any parts store or performance place.

The HEI is way better than points.

the original wiring harness in the car is all messed up and we dont know what goes to what that is why I just did away with the HEI but is there a way to hard wire the HEI back in the car

ok go get a performance HEI, just look one up from jegs. You Don't need the harness. You just need a power and tach wires.

switching back to points because the hei does not work is the hard way to fix cars....

do you have a wire you can plug into the hei cap BAT terminal??????  that you could hook to the positive battery temporarly???

got a set of jumper cables...   hook one clamp to the battery negative...   the other clamp to the distributer housing... turn the hei over cap down on something that is grounded.. or  something that you have hooked the second jumper cable clamp too with the other end grounded... like the air cleaner lid...    with the HEI upside down spin the shaft... sparks should fly from the cap terminals....
no spark...   take out the module like was posted.. take it to an autozone or other as many have module testers... if it passes the first test... have them run the test six times... the heat build up in the module from testing if the module is bad will cause the module to show if it is bad...

dielectric tune up grease goes under the module...

got a digital volt meter...   they are cheep... staring at 5 bucks.. you dont need to spend over 20 bucks for a basic model...  probe the pick up coil wires with the module disconnected... and the meter set to 2K ohms setting... you should see between 500 ohms and 1.500 ohms...

then flip the volt meter setting to 20 volts AC...   spin the shaft...  you need to see over 1 volt AC for the pick up coil to trigger the module ...  this second test takes less than a minute... and will verify the unseen stuff in the ignition system...

another thing...    under the coil in cap HEI's... there is a ground strap of folded metal that connects to the center wire of the 3 wire plug in the cap... this is the ground for the coil and its frame... without this ground strap.. the HEI will blow out modules and coils...

what year make and model car is it...   which engine came with it... i might be able to post a link for the wiring diagram for it...

you can add a ballist resistor to the circuit to reduce voltage to the positive side of the coil... but you also need to add a wire from the R terminal on the left hand side of the starter solenoid to bypass the resistor for starting...

this is how they work...  the HEI equipped cars also have a different kind of ignition switch...  so you also might run it to slight problems there...    point type cars break the power from the ignition switch during cranking, letting the higher voltage from the bypass wire from the starter power the coil at full battery voltage...  when you release the key to the run position.. the starter feed stops and the car runs through the resistance wire from the key.. this reduces coil voltage to just about 10 volts... makes the points last longer...

the HEI only needs one wire to work...  much simpler...  far more power to the plugs...
