Ok so here is my problem.... I bought a 350 that I know came out of a 70's vette. What I don't know is if it was original to the car or if it may have been a donor at some point before. These are all the numbers that I have found on it:

ID code ( I think anyway)- T1002CMR

Vin Code( again ?)- 14P438897

Casting date- H23 73

Casting #- 3970014 (looks like 0814 but i cant find a ref for that so I assume 0014 is correct)

Also on a side note I am wondering what the T1 and Conv 2 stamps represent

Thanks, Daniel

If you are sure about the date code then you have a  350 from a chevelle that came factory with a th-400 trans and a2brl. carb and had 145 HP but if the date code is a 78 instead of 73 then it came from a 1978 350 corvette 220HP with th-350 trans. and 4brl. carb.
the 3970014 350 block was used from 1968-79.

I accidently deleted my account so this is my new one. With ref to the above, the only other # I see is N68 right above the oil filter. The H23 73 is on the flange to the right of the casting number.

MY THOUGHTS ON THE 350 IS THAT YOU ALREADY BOUGHT THE MOTOR SO JUST RUN WITH IT. CHECK YOUR HEAD CASTING NUMBERS. IT COULD CHANGE YOUR MIND ABOUT IT.

Were you going to rebuild it or just put it in as it is.
That is a decent block and the engine can be built up for more power.

Well I cant seem to read the head casting correctly so here is what it looks like...
3886338, or 3986338, or 3988336  so honestly i have no idea. And i tried to locate the date code and all i found was GM with a 12 under it and then at the other end what looked like a 02  and possibly an N by itself

I pulled the other valve cover and it was very clear on that head... 3986336
dated A 21 1
So my question is how good are these heads?

They are your basic low compression heads and most likely low performance as well.
