Im looking to start my first engine build and as you can guess Im pretty excited. I finally have the garage space and a job which will allow me to take on the project. A friend of mine has a running 350 from a early 90's Camaro, and is willing to sell me just the block out of it. The casting numbers on the block are 14093638. Does anyone have any experience with this block? Would this be a good starting point for a project? Pending that there are no cracks or anything Id really appreciate any input or opinions as this is my first attempt at building a full engine. Thanks everyone!

After looking at the casting numbers on the crank (14088526) I found out this block is most likeley from a 87-89 Camaro. This crank was also used in corvettes of those years. Would the block and crank be a good starting place? they look to be in good condition

from 93 to 97 the motors were LT1's 97 to 02 are LS1's and LS6's.

Ok, the block is a good idea. you need one of thoughs. blocks are hard to trash plus its already seasond. As far as the crank you need to find out the size and what kind of metal it is. You can tell this by the measureing the distance between the centerline of the crank to the centerline to the journal. and you can tell if the crank is cast or fordged by looking down the crank. A cast crank has a very thin line and is not recomended to reuse. A fordged crank has a very wide line and looks like a grinder was on it and you can reuse after it has been checked. You should take both to a machine shop (a good one, norm. a hole in the wall) and get all you machineing done. That way everything is right. Get the rotating assembly balanced. You'll thank yourself for it. And a high volume oil pump.

congrats on your first chevy build. welcome to the club.

That 1987-89 1 piece seal block will be fine but the older 2 piece seal model blocks hold up better and are cheaper to build.
I would not recommend going more then .040 over on the cylinders because the one piece seal block are thinner then the 2 piece seal blocks which can be bore .060 over.
Also the crank should be fine just have it turned by a repetable machine shop and have all the necessary machine work done.
