NOT GONNA GET TO MUCH OUT OF A 283, BUT YOU CAN BORE THE CYLINDERS, DO HEAD WORK, AND CHANGE THE CAM. I BELIVE THE HIGHEST FACTORY HP WAS AROUND 300HP, NOT TO BAD. PROBLY CHEAPER TO GET A 350 IF YOU WANT MORE. IF YOUR HAVE DEEP POCKETS GO FOR THE BBC.

I just ran some number for another guy with a 283cid. I have a dyno sim. program on my cpu that I use to build motors.

This guy 327 crank, a 283 block bored .060 over which made it a 316cid. Also had a big roller cam with a 600 lift, iron eagle heads 2.02 1.6 valve, and I told him that with a 800 cfm carb, sigle plane intake. and the cam -5 drg. offset that he wold have a 580 hp motor at 8000 rpm.

now you take that foundation and install a long rod you'll get a lot more, because thoughs little motors love to spin.

Big block s spin up that quick. There more for that last 1/8 mile.

hope this helps you out.

Abuddy of mine had a 283 and he ran in the 9's in the quarter mile so the 283 has potential it just depends on how much you want to spin.

I have a 62 Impala which came with a 283 & powerglide, after about 5 years I wanted more power too, came across a nice 350 crate motor & 700R4 tranny for cheap, it was a huge difference, but my only regret is I had no room to store the 283 & powerglide, so it went, if you got the space i recommend putting the 283 on a stand and slowly building it up while you enjoy the bigger motor

joseywales62 has a good point. Build the 283 and take your time. make it bullitproff.

Hey pontiacman2, I use desktop dyno 2003. I want a more updated one but can't find one. why you ask.?

Plus if you decide to sell it you still have the original motor & tranny with it, just not in the car

Any idea how much in value it decreases without the original motor & tranny ???
