I have a 70 Chevelle malibu with a 10 bolt 8.25 gear (factory as far as I can tell) I am installing new poly bushings springs, etc front and rear, I got the rear out of the car and want to tear it down to flush out the oil, install new seals, paint etc. Well it dont have C-clips, I didnt know gm used this type of rears in these cars. So before I try to remove the axles I am posting to see if there is any thing specific I dont want to damage anything. Also is there another type of rear that will bolt up that has an 8.5 gear because I have a brand new auburn posi unit for a 10 bolt 8.5 and 3.73 gears. Also it has a rear sway bar that bolts to the bottom of the rear control arms instead of the side. As far as I know the F-41 option sway bar bolted to the sides of the control arms any info on this??????? It is bent just a little like someone backed up and caught it on something. Its gonna be fun to reinstall it. Thanks for any info.

It could be someone installed a C-clip eliminator kit in the past, that would explain why they're missing from your rear.

The axles dont have the slots cut in the end for c-clips to go. If it had an eliminator kit installed these would still be there.

I had the same rearend in my trans am. the best thing I can say is to get another one. Then axles need to be taken out with a bid slide hammer thats if they come out. good luck getting them bake in.

There is always the 9in. out of a ford truck. Just need to do some fabricating. its not hard. just got to shorten the axle shafts and tubes, transfer all hardwear over. And mod the driveshaft.
Or you can hunt down junkyards that have old cars in it and find another chevelle rearend from a big block car. Thoughs cars came will like 3 or 4 diff. rearends.
If I find anything I'll let you know.

Take a look at the Moser 12-bolt rear axles. They're pretty tough and should go in place of the weak 10-bolt with a little tweaking. You probably need to to get the spring perches welded up to match the position on your 10-bolt. 3.73 or 4.11 gears will work well. Moser tech will have all your answers. If you can't swing the cost of the Moser then get a factory 12-bolt and beef it up yourself. Anything is better than a 10 bolt GM except possibly for a glass-geared Dana 30 that used to come with Yuppie Jeeps ( Jeep YJ ). If all alse fails go with a Currie 9-inch, but some Chevy folks would consider that blasphemy - bolting a Ford rear end on a Chevy. That rear end is bullet proof - theres no arguing that point, one of the few things that Ford did right, and the removable 3rd member is also a cool feature - you don't have to replace the whole axle just the 3rd member. I know some folks who keep a spare one with alternate gearing for an easy conversions at the track.

Moser also has a direct replacement. And there is nothing wrong with a FORD 9in. Hell all of nascar uses them. So what makes them any better. But you were saying you didn't want to spend alot. A moser is about $1700 for a direct replacement, in 12 bolt or 9in.

Well $1700 counts me out. I only gave $2500 for the whole car. Does any one want a brand new Auburn posi unit and new 3.73 gears for a 10 bolt 8.5 with 31 splined axles???????

I agree. Ford 9-inch is a bulletproof rear-end, but those Nascar folks aren't running the same "Ford 9-inch" that you'd find in a junk yard. Just like those cars are nothing like the Chevy Lumina's that they are based on. I'm not a big Nascar fan but my point is that the gear that those folks are running on the track have very little resemblance to anything like the stock parts they are loosely based on. There's no way a stock Chevy engine can turn 9000 rpm for any amount of time ( or for any time at all unless you throw a whole lot of time & monay at it )like their blocks can take for 500 laps.

I guess the 8.25 is just going to have to do. It should last until I can find a replacement. Thanks for all the help
