I own a '72 Chevelle. It was my first car and hasn't run in years. I recently ordered a custom crate engine. However the new engine is a 87-92 350 block with the 1-piece rear main seal, the old oil dipstick will not work. I've looked at local parts stores and performance catalogs and I can't seem to find the dipstick I need.
The new dipstick plug is located at the rear of the block at the bottom near the oil pan on the passenger side. I'm using a BBC dipstick that I have bent to fit, it's just a quick fix and doesn't read correctly.
I need to find this dipstick and I can't understand why it is so difficult to find at a local parts store. I would assume that it is pretty standard, or does nobody use these blocks for build-ups

you are looking at the wrong store... try a gm dealership... up till recently.. most small block chevys were the 2 piece seal blocks... left or right hand dipstick... left hand dip sticks were prior to mid 1980...
i was just looking over at lmc truck... right hand dip sticks...
38-1841 has a billet top... 80 to 92...
38-1812 is a conventional chrome right hand dip stick...
