I just got done rebuilding a 350 in my old 72 1/2 ton. Had an issue with it buning oil in the few minutes of start up, assumed it was residue from assembly. Let it run for a while and it never cleared up. Suspected an intake gasket was to blame, sucking in oil from the lifter valley. Changed intake gaskets and resealed. Still Leaking oil into combustion chamber. Anyone got any suggestions??? This thing is smoking like a Freight train!!!

most of the time when one is constantly smoking it can mean cracked rings. Check the plugs to see which cylinder(s) may be the trouble. I assume the valve seals are new so this should not be the problem.

Already pulled all spark plugs, all are coated with oil. The exhaust manifolds have plugs where the emission pipes use to be, there is oil seeping from all of these pipe plugs as well

wow!! is the intake new? I was thinking PCV valve could be sucking oil but not that much!! Have you checked all of the vacuum lines to see if they have oil in them. I have had a car suck trans fluid through the modulator but not on a chevy.

Its a fairly new Edelbrock Performer RPM. When I pulled the intake off to reseal it I didnt notice any oil in any of the vacuum lines including the one to the trans modulator. This thing is definatly burning engine oil though.

Did you bore the engine or just re ring it. also were the heads gone through if so did they surface them.

humm. you got a pickle on your hands. To rule out presure in the crank case, take out the dip stick and oil fill cap then run it. if smoking stops then it might be a vacume problem of piston ring.
Take the valve covers off and check your valve guide seals. You could have the wrong ones or installed incorrectly. Thats were my moneys at.
And just like pontiacman2 says. just reringing the motor will cause that too. As a cylinder wares it tappers. Boring it out make it true again. So I second that.
good luck with that one.

compression check.... may spot a broken ring...
change the PCV valve... find a delco in a box... from an old time parts store...
did the oil drain back holes in the both ends of the head get cleaned out...
when you took off the intake... did you examine the gaskets to see how far they got crushed by the intake manifold when it was bolted down...
if you take the intake back off.. be sure to check the end rail gap with the side gaskets installed... sometimes the block may have been decked.. or the heads been decked... this will change the thickness of the end rail seals... i have had engines so far off.. that nothing would fit... i cleaned the surface with brake cleaner... glued on the intake side gaskets.. and used ULTRA black or Ultra grey silicone ONLY for the end seals...
start tightening the intake from the center... working in an X back and forth... and around... i always go around... 3 times after i get the intake tight... with a torque wrench... not three turns... check each bolt in series... 3 times...

Which valve seals did you use? If you installed the old school white teflon seals, odds are they're your problem. If those things aren't installed exactly correct, they won't seal for crap. If that's not it, sounds like the rings are junk.

fixed the problem guys, Stupidity on my behalf. I didnt bother measuring the bore, or ring gap, I thought I was dealing with a standard 350, so I installed standard rings, turns out each cylinder has been bored .060" over with .060" over pistons, Ive only had the truck for 2 years, I should of known that the engine wasnt stock guess that makes it a 360 cid. Installed a new set of .060" oversized rings and problem solved!!! Thanks for all the suggestions.
